    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Hello all, I was wondering if any of you could give me any information on the Black Duck at Loch Sunart/Strontian in West Highland recently? The reason I am asking this is that I am going to be staying on Mull for a few days in a couple of weekends time (around 16th July) , and I was thinking...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

I have just returned from a three day trip up to Speyside. Overall it was successful and thoroughly enjoyable, even though I missed out on Capercaillie, Black Grouse and Crested Tit - all of which were birds I tried hard for but had no success with. On the A939 a few miles east of Corgaff, a...

Hi Paul, I have been to the Cabrach site that you mentioned - I went last year with Tree Sparrow. She is right that the exact details of the site in the Cabrach should not be revealed for the very reasons she outlined. It's great to hear you had them there recently, if I am unsuccessful at...

Hi Dave, Thanks very much for this information, that's promising to hear. What sort of time are we looking at before the birds would usually stop lekking (8ish)? Would there be much of a chance of seeing them after they have stopped lekking? All the Best, Joseph

Hi all, I will very likely be up in Speyside next weekend. I was just wondering what the chances of Black Grouse would be at Tulloch Moor at the moment? I would be right in thinking that they have stopped lekking now? If they have indeed stopped lekking, what would my chances realistcally be...

Thanks for the information jpoyner. I am gonna be able to make it for the 21st now and thus in time for the last Caperwatch of the year. Ptarmigan I presume would be anywhere on the tops? Also, may I ask what my chances of Golden Eagle, Ring Ouzel, Scottish Crossbill and Goshawk in the Speyside...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Hi all, Will very likely be heading up to Speyside in search of Capercallie, Ptarmigan and Crested Tit next weekend. I am not sure if I'll be able to make it on the 21st just yet when the caperwatches end, and If I'm unable to then of course that will lessen my chances. I am aware it is a...

Presumably this is the place to talk about birds at Burghead? There have been two White-billed Divers at Burghead today. One of them seems to have gone according to reports from Birdguides, but one still remains there. Has anyone got anymore information on this bird/these birds?

Took a trip up to Burghead today from Aberdeen in search of the King Eider, and was very happy to find that it was still there, incredibly close in (maybe about 80ft) with 15 or so Common Eiders. Very much worth the trip, its a cracking bird and the viewing conditions couldn't have been better...

Congratulations Marcus, some brilliant birds and a great day out. Burghead sounds like quite a tempting location to go and see some nice birds before the end of the year. ;)

Its great to hear that you are seeing Waxwings Marcus, hardly any have been reported in Scotland so far this winter. Hopefully they'll head east and arrive down here in Aberdeenshire and elsewhere in the near future. Hope your enjoying your new home. ;)

A lovely programme, wasn't the photography just beautiful? I loved the bit where they showed the juvenile White-tailed Eagle first taking to the air in particular. I think the Highlands looks like a beautiful place to go birding. Haven't really given it a great deal of justice to be honest, and...
