    Birding in Worcestershire

Spotted Flycatcher in trees on Malvern Common between Peachfield Road and Malvern College grounds this lunchtime. First I've seen in this area.

    Birding in Worcestershire

A Tree Pipit was singing and doing its song-flight from trees on Malvern Common between Peachfield Road and Malvern College grounds this lunchtime. I've no idea how unusual this is. I walk the area regularly during my lunch-breaks but this is the first one I've encountered in this spot. They...

    Birding in Worcestershire

Pied Fly could turn up there on passage at this time of year but it would be unusual to see one on the ground - have you ruled out female-type Wheatear? They are a terrestrial species and are regular on Bredon at this time of year.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Red Kite over the Qinetiq site, Malvern just now - circling low down.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Red Kite over Malvern Hills Science Park just now (c13:10) circling high and heading south.

    Birding in Worcestershire

A Little Egret this evening just before 6pm between Callow End and Powick - quite surreal as it was flying virtually alongside my car at one point as I was driving home!

    Birding in Worcestershire

Red Kite hanging around Trench Wood and Saleway early afternoon.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Nice to see a (fairly) late adult Hobby this morning on my way to work - it flew low over Jennet Tree Lane, Deblins Green (near Malvern) - right in front of my car - great views.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Yes - I remember going for it the next morning but no sign. People who saw that bird said it had even set up a food cache ("larder"). I would've loved to have seen that as it's behaviour that's not easy to see in the UK these days.

    Birding in Worcestershire

That is a fantastic record! To put it in context - I'm guessing it is probably the first JULY record in Worcestershire for about 50 years. IIRC the last confirmed breeding record was 1962 (British Camp, Malvern), followed by just a few more sporadic spring/summer records during the 1960's...

    Birding in Worcestershire

Another Siskin over Barnard's Green this morning. I agree that they aren't that unusual at this time of year in Worcs - in previous years I've had mid-summer records over Salwarpe and over Lower Kite's Wood near Dormston. Nice to see them though because last winter was unusually poor for them on...

    Birding in Worcestershire

An unseasonal Siskin flew over Barnard's Green, Malvern this lunch time.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Just one singing male WW left on my patch this year. I have noticed how these isolated birds often adapt their songs to include a few strained chiff-chaff type phrases on occasion - probably in desperation.

    Birding in Worcestershire

A Red Kite over Jennet Tree Lane, Callow End this morning as I drove in to work.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Driving to work this morning - there appeared to be a Little Egret on a 'borrow pit' near Powick flood alleviation scheme - although I was driving and couldn't stop so the views were very limited.

    Birding in Worcestershire

It was nice to see a family party of Spotted Flycatchers at my sister's house in Dormston this afternoon. Apparently they nested in the climbing plants on one of the barns and fledged in the last few days. They have been very scarce on my patch this year so it's good to know they are doing ok...

    Birding in Worcestershire

Makes more sense, thanks. I agree that your bird was in all likelihood a Hen Harrier but, on a date of 7th May, Monty's would have to be ruled out which isn't a trivial matter IMHO - I guess you were happy with the structure of the bird being more Hen? I think I was confused by 'ring' when I...

    Birding in Worcestershire

Sorry Sy - that doesn't really make much sense to me - not sure what your interpretation of 'ring' is in this context or how it might relate to separating the ringtail harrier species.

Great news re the 2-barred Xbills for Worcs - but not county firsts either per WMBC - however, the last one was in 1838!! Good luck to those who are able to go tomorrow.

A bit premature to declare any county firsts maybe - personally, I would wait until unequivocal evidence / images are presented.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Are you surprised? - it was never a serious contender as far as I and other observers were concerned- the call and song were both wrong and the appearance in the field wasn't promising either.

    Birding in Worcestershire

Blimey, MB - that is close for a Merg. I just hope it decides to fly down to Upton Warren as I've never seen a drake there.:t:

    Birding in Worcestershire

Excellent shots Pete - they were trickier than usual on Sunday for some reason. I had a Garden Warbler there also on that day - the first one for that particular site this year. B (:
