Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Calling all photographers. In final throes of the 2012 WMBC report. If you have any photos of birds taken in 2012 I would be pleased to hear from you. I try to use as many as I can but prefer un-edited images so I can crop etc to suit. [email protected]. Thanks!

Thanks Keith but my job is "easy" compared to that of the county recorders! We had 980 contributors to the 2011 report - a mountain of records to sift through. Well done Nick and Co:t:

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

When I took over as Annual Report Editor in 1999 (!) I deliberately changed the name of the Report to show clearly which counties we cover because the Club's name is very confusing. Adding the word "Counties" would be a simple and, dare I say, painless way out. Dave

Copmere Sunday 11th A very cold Duck Count with snow drifting across the lake (it was sunny this time last year!). The Smew hung on to get included! 23 Cormorants sitting in the trees (is this a site record Nick?). Also, just to the sitting side of them and slightly aloof was a nice Peregrine...

No I did not pick up the legs - just the head shape that suggested Ibis to me and the all-dark colour. I did see one a few weeks back. I suppose I will never know for sure but after 40 years birding I do know that it was something out of the ordinary! Dave

OK one rubbish photo but you can't see the small head with down-curved bill on it but it is only a 100mm lens!

glossy ibis alert May be it's the heat - not used to it but just seen what looked to me to be a Glossy Ibis circling over the Observatory at Keele (13.30). It was very distant and only had my bins and macro lens (!). Just posting this in haste in case anyone is in the Keele-Silverdale area...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Most recording schemes use the vice-county system so that they can have continuity of recording area and are able to compare historical distributions with current day. Watson developed this idea because he wanted to set up more equi-sized recording units. He set about combining some counties and...

I agree with Nick. I spend much of my life with websites. If you put something on a website or a forum like this you are publishing it just as sure as if you were putting it in a newspaper and therefore you are bound by the same laws and you could be liable to the same consequences. Please be...

Smew at Copmere - a history From my notes, the first Smew was on 14/12/1996. I remember it well. It was the WeBS count. The lake was half frozen. I scanned the ice first and there, standing on the ice, was a Bewick's Swan - a first for me there at any rate. Feeling well-chuffed I started...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Fantastic find! I've been visiting Copmere for 40 years so am well and truly "gripped off"! As to Smew, there are two records on the WeBS database : 15 Dec, 1996 and 16 Dec, 1998. Being one day but two years apart these dates look an bit suspect; I'll check my notes when I get home.
