Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Maybe it's best if the "To feed or not to feed" discussion is left for the rare bird thread, rather than this one? And whatever your opinion is on the subject, I think it's been done to death by now. :flyaway:

Happy new year all! B (: B (: B (:B (: And good riddance to 2014 for Staffs rarities? 8-P Apart from the Pacific Golden Plover at Middleton of course. Lesser Scaup at Tittesworth, a couple of Roseate Terns at Belvide. Can't think of much else? Hopefully now we're all safely in 2015 it'll be...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Yes I did, last weekend, with exactly the same thoughts. Absolutely zip! :-O Well, apart from a flock of Golden Plover and some Red Grouse. But I don't think that's any reason at all to give up on the moors, far from it. Birders may well want a shufty at Gib Tor, just to the north of the...

Or, to be a bit more S-Pacific...... What a cracking record, and another rare wader for Middleton/Drayton Bassett.

A pair were at Wall Farm NR in Shropshire on Monday morning. Also from the release scheme, but I understand they are different to the birds that were over Aqualate. Different ring combinations you see.

Stop picking on my mate Manfred, I've grown quite attached now.

The Great Crane Robbery After all the excitement and palpitations at Aqualate on Sunday afternoon, I wondered if this was going to happen. http://www.thegreatcraneproject.org.uk/blogs/damon-bridge/manfred-takes-trip Turns out that one of the Aqualate Cranes is a released bird from the Great...

Aqualate Thanks very much Ian, it certainly got the adrenaline pumping! The Garganey was smart too, straight in front of the hide. Just to give a sense of distance the Cranes were, and getting higher and higher in the sky, here's an original picture plus the same one hugely cropped. So if...

In addition to Nick's directions. At the Forestry Commission gate and turn right, there is a pile of stones. From that pile of stones, turn right and it eventually turns into a quite narrow, twisty, turny path as it heads to the top of the hill. I had about an hour with Andy this evening, no...

Thanks John Taking photos of them was an after-thought. But thinking about it, if I had done and they'd seen me, then that might've caused a confrontation too. But I have sent an email to Staffordshire Police Wildlife Crime Unit. Just see what comes of it. The matter is also going to be...

I wasn't sure how illegal it was either. I didn't really want to confront them, because they're the ones with guns.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Gailey Great White Egret at the second attempt today. Shortly afterwards, sadly I had to witness the Oystercatcher being shot by one of five "top marksmen" stood on the causeway, between the sailing lake and fishing lake, which was then collected by their dog swimming out. :-C Being left...

This was the Tameside bird from December 2009. Looks like a Whinchat to me.

Despite telling AB to take his camera to work, alas no. See what happens this weekend. That's the trouble at this time of year with so little daylight. And I was with you at the time of the Tameside bird. In fact I think I have a digiscoped pic of that bird somewhere. But I'm off to bed now.

Alas I dipped that Whinchat yesterday afternoon. Mandarin counts to do, RC Pochards to find and all that (much better than all those sea duck) 3:-). No chance for me until the weekend, as long as all the Ivory Gulls have scarpered. But it definitely is one :t: And not unheard of either at...

Having seen the Aqualate bird and the Belvide pics, I'm going stick my head above the parapet, I think that's a different bird. I wonder what young Ian of Aqualate thinks?

Yes, remarkably my comment got through last night! 3:-) Didn't see that Greenland White-front at Whitemoor Haye personally, but I do remember of it and the really wild Barnacles around the same time.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Well I told you it was there at the time. I seem to remember it was at Fisher's Mill that afternoon, most of which is in W*rwickshire. Too complicated for some of us, but not a problem if you're doing a regional year list ;).
