The site was monitored yesterday from 0600 to 2100hrs continuosly. The locust is probably one of many still left lying around.

Just to recap on the Red-footed Falcon for those who are struggling and comparing this case with putting seed out for your Chaffinches. 1) A Red-footed Falcon turned up in Stoke on a Friday and showed very well to all who turned up on the first day. 2) The next day, someone (i know who) decided...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

The feeding of the Cretz has been discussed on the red foot thread. Main reason was habitat protection so that birders weren't wandering around the island falling into many shearwater burrows. This red foot was fed locusts so that photographers could get better shots. Same answer as appears on...

Yes I did warn him. And I'm still on site because I know as soon as I drive off he'll do his party trick again and start throwing out locusts again.

More posts about the alpine swift are on the west mids thread. It gets confusing on this thread when you post news from neighbouring counties. .

Mine copy has £17-95 pencilled in the front cover. Apparently only 100 were done originally and it says its quite a rare book.

I'm fairly certain I bought it from the book shop in Leek. Also have the repro copy of The Birds of Staffordshire by McAldowie from 1893. It mentions Gailey as "a poor place that is very hard work when birdwatching and not really worth the effort but does get the odd rare bird every decade." He...

but if you look at that Jane Turner-esque montage of the wing patterns, don't you think the top two wing shots are remarkably similar. The only differece I can se is the angle of the wing. The white blog looks v similar in pattern. That would make the Priorslee bird and Chasewater bird the same...

Even the pattern of the black band on the upper manibles match. There's a small v section if you look. Like I said, first impressions count more in my opinion than a photo.

Your first impression in the field was of a hybrid RBG x LBBG. You said the mantle went darker as the sun went down. Now you are listening to very experienced gullers who are just examining a photo. Nothing beats first hand experience in the field. A single photo is just a snap shot. If an...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Birdguides call it West Mids. WMBC report will call it West Mids. Any rarites in the BBRC will put it down as West Mids. 40 years ago now boys. Time to get real and accept Staffordshire is Staffordshire and West Mids is West Mids.

Just read a Birding World article from 2012 about the female down in Sussex(?). Mentioned it having a noticeably small eye, created by the big head and big beak. Looked on Birdguides at the Budby birds and the first two both have the small eye. Can see what is being said by the small beaks on...

I've not seen the Chase birds yet but did see the Norfolk Parrotbills in November. I've posted one of my pics for comparison. Some birds in the photo's above just don't seem to have the massive beak for a Parrotbill. Some beaks appear elongated but not as massive as a Parrotbill. The close up...

I wondered when the West Midlands Glossy Ibis would appear with the Staffs news. Just a note to you south staffs boundary fudgers, next April 1st, 2014 marks the 40th anniversary since the local government act created the county of West Midlandshire. I wondered if you had any plans to...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Seen at Croxall in March 2009. Same time as the 15 Barnacle Geese, some of which were colour rung. We dipped the GWFG on the Saturday then when news came on the summer Smyrna and myself headed down. Was a general lack of interest cos it was probably only a subspecies and no one was bothered...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

The story goes like this - a birdwatcher found a full s/pl RBFly at a site in North Staffs. He told another birder on site who also saw it. He decided not to put the news out as he thought it was probably an escape. Knowing one person involved, it probably won't be submitted anyway, so the whole...
