Hi Carl Yes that's what it looks like to me. Large head, bull necked and hatchet bill but long wings and very much Caspo legs. On the subject of the numbers. As you probably know LBBG's and probably some Herring are breeding at Scudamore Rd and most days I see LBBG's heading from that...

'twas me Dave, from the other vantage point overlooking both lagoons. cheers, Neil

Hi Astley The only realistic option from public land is the A5 itself. I don't view from anywhere else and find many of the birds eventually come to the lagoons to bathe, drink and preen. Park anywhere off the A5 close to Newton Lane. Some park just inside the lane. The tricky (and quite frankly...

Thanks Carl. What a striking bird. I've been twice this week, best birds were a Green Sand on the upper lagoon and Little Grebe on the lower but I was distracted by a nice piece of Roman pottery I found no doubt washed out by all the recent snow and ice. Where is the access to get to the place...

Hi Carl Nice find. Funnily enough I noticed the name the last time I visited the landfill (rather than the silt lagoons) so it may just be that it hadn't been 'signed' prominantly before? Cheers Neil

Seems like Shawell has been forgotten but Carl has been making regular visits since late summer and has built up a good series of records and colour ring data. I went this morning and had two Caspian and four Yellow legged Gulls, nine Shoveller and at least one Waxwing over so it's still...

Well that was a turn up for the books. There were 107 gulls on the big lagoon today - six species and five colour rings which were all readable.

Good stuff Carl, thanks. My personal view is that it is good to know that such birds exist (trapped, ringed and examined in the hand). Rather than putting birders off from looking at gulls they remind us that it's OK to leave some unidentified and concentrate on the ones we can put a name to.

thanks John & Dave. What a great day at Lawford. any pics of the dark one Dave?

A few more gulls today and some more colour rings. No wonder there are no white wingers ... they are all at Lawford tip (Glauc & four Iceland reported today)! Did have two small dark Canada Geese (pic attached). I don't pretend to know much about CG taxonomy so any observations welcomed.

very few gulls today and poor viewing (misty). Nothing of note but still a few Icelands at large (Draycote roost).

Had to drop Jane off in Lutterworth on a quick errand, so I grabbed the chance for 20 mins at the small lagoon. A few more colour rings and this rather nice Iceland which I'd not seen before. There were about 250-300 gulls at the tip picking over the last working. The tip face is now a long way...

Thanks Carl I've had a few of Peter Stewart's birds that have spent time in Spain (in fact AEC at Shawell yesterday has spent time in Malaga). The speed of transit is also remarkable. I had a cold weather movement from Shawell to northern Spain in Jan 2010 that took just a few days. Your...

More gardening this time from the other end to allow viewing of both silt ponds and embankments. 3rd W Caspian and at least one 2nd W Yellow-legged. Loads of gulls around the tip plus what there was on the ponds. Five more colour rings but some are virtually unreadable. Come on c-r people put...

thanks Carl At least that's one of the Draycote birds accounted for, we just need the others to come exploring our way.

thanks for the update John, we'll just have to keep the faith at Shawell. On the subject of access, I would if I could but that's all Lafarge land with no access agreement for now. The 'new access' is just a foliage clear corridor at the side of the road and although the trucks still whizz by...

Nothing of note today. I thought it would be worth mentioning that the silt ponds don't just attract gulls. For two small bodies of water they often have a surprisngly varied avifauna. In the last month (from memory) I have logged Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Shoveller, Pochard, Tufted Duck...

thanks Carl, that mystery birder was you! Sorry I didn't have time to stop. You should see the difference next visit. best Neil

Bit of gardening Just to let you know that as of 16:00 today, it is now possible to walk all the way to the viewpoint off the road!! It feels a hell of a lot safer and you only have to set foot on the A5 in order to cross it. Didn't have time to check the silt ponds but I did see a birder in...

thanks John. I doubt between the two of you much has slipped through, the impressive list speaks for itself, good work. It is interesting that none of the white wings has been at Shawell in the last 48 hours but I'd be surprised if they don't do the rounds soon. It would be interesting to hear...

Nice one Carl. There were two YLG's 'paired' last year about this time but the Caspian's together must have been a sight. Steve tells me that John had a polish ringed Caspian at Rutland last week. cheers Neil

thanks Dave, yes that looks more like a 2nd W should but still distinctive. Can any of the Draycote boys confirm that the bird from Tuesday looked anything like this? I'll pm you on Lafarge as I'd appreciate your thoughts. cheers Neil

Wow! that's far more eye catching than I'd expected. If the Draycote bird looked anything like that it should get picked up somewhere.

Had a session at lunchtime but mainly looking at the lower silt pond from the south east. Small ad Caspian (looked familiar but could be new) and ad YLG. Sadly no white winged gulls but lots of colour rings read including an Icelandic LBBG. What does a 2nd W 'Azorean' Gull look like by the way...

Thanks John, what a great cast. All I had at Shawell today was ..... nothing. Well not completely true, a colour ringed Herring Gull from Norfolk and an LBBG from Gloucester. That has definitely encouraged me to try again tomorrow or Thursday though.
