Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

If a flat roof, most probably drinking in pools of water that may have formed. I thought that it was you that I saw ! There were a few colour ringed birds in that flock - might be good to check all photos. Cheers, Lindsay

Many thanks for posting and reporting this colour-ringed Waxwing. If that bird is RGL, which it looks like, it was ringed by myself, Raymond Duncan and Euan Ferguson on 2/12/12 in Ferryhill, Aberdeen. Was it in Peterhead when photographed ? Raymond will be able to give a full history of...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Grampian Ringing Group have now colour-ringed over 120 Waxwings, and quite a few of these still seem to be present in the city so please check all birds for rings. I believe Orkney have (single) colour ringed (Yellow) about the same amount, with so far only one of these spotted and a single...

Thanks for that report and accurate count Andrew, saw it on ABZ birds last night. Sods Law - all the GRG ringers (bar me, who works on Saturday's) was at the Ringers Conference this weekend so no effort ! I did have 170 at Allenvale on Thursday but again was on my own. We might get a few caught...

Following Ron Summer's talk on "Scotland's Crossbills" at SOC Aberdeen on Monday 1st October, and specifically with regards to the point a gentleman rasied about submitting Crossbill records to the NESBR: http://pinemuncher.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/submitting-crossbill-records-to-nesbr.html...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Off topic slightly this but I wonder if someone could do me a favour ? I needed to check my copy of "The Breeding Birds of North East Scotland" for data for someone and I noticed that some pages that were blank ( pages 4 - 5 inclusive). Does anyone know if this is normal or is mine a typical...

Can someone let me know what the current published NESBR is ? The most recent one I have is 2009, but I thought I had received 2010 and have been hunting round my study looking for it ! I know I have written my species accounts for 2010 but I have really lost the plot with all this ! Have the...

Happy New Year Everyone, I am in the process of revamping my study and subsequently clearing out superfluous stuff. I have Birdwatch Magazine Jan 2005 through to Dec 2009 complete and no longer need. It is free to the first uplifter (sorry can't deliver). I live in Central Aberdeen. Will hold...

Well done Joseph, that is a fantastic sighting and very good record and thanks for reporting it ! Must be the best total thus far I reckon. Wouldn't expect you to get clr rings or age/sex data under those circumstances but if you do I am sure that our secretary Raymond Duncan would receive them...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Hi Everyone, Reasons for variation of Waxwing influx numbers into UK between 'good' and 'bad' years are probably quite complex. It could be dependent on available Rowan crops in Fennoscandia but also how successful the breeding season (and population increase !) has been. Last winter there were...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Largest flock was yesterday, pushing 50. Waxwings do not eat contoneaster until the New year when they 'become good to eat'. Couldn't locate that flock again despite searching ! Probably in Dundee/Fife by now.... LC

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

45 Waxwings in Aberdeen yesterday but a lack of berries means they ain't gonna hang around. Loads of cotoneaster so hopefully there will be some birds available in to the new year. LC

I once heard a 'tale' of Capers over Aberdeen Harbour ! :eek!: Yes, Atlas is good, a few wee errors here and there that should have been picked up in proofing (pie fly) but nothing at all to detract from a worthy publication, and yes an absolute bargain.

That is almost as nuts as the male Red Grouse displaying at Balnagask Golf Course a few years ago !

Sorry Joseph, Meant Braeloine Car park, duh ! Have previously had Pied Fly there and also have seen and heard Wood Warblers there couple of years ago. Think the Ranger at Burn O vat has had Wood warbler recently there though. Looks a good area but do watch out for deer ticks which are rank in...

Wood warbler regular at Tanar (North of Burn o Vat Car park) and I have also had Pied Fly there and at Craigendarroch. Good to hear the Green Woods haven't completely evaporated as the hard winter seems to have displaced them from newly occupied breeding sites up the Glens. LC

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Hi Andrew, Yup, looks like my picking (and ringing) hand ! Glad everyone enjoyed looking at the birds and got nice piccies - Waxies really are incredibly beautiful birds in situ but when you see them in hand they transcend even the field views. Keep checking your photos for clr ringed birds ...

Waxwings Grampian Ringing Group have colour ringed 112 Waxwings this weekend, with 59 ringed within the city. Can birders please keep a look out for these marked birds in within the city and also further afield. Even local resightings let us know how far the birds are foraging/ranging so do...

I have had an untagged first year Red Kite a few times at Potarch, possibly the same bird.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Bird ringers put feeders up in specific areas to attract birds which they intend to catch. The necessary permissions will have been sought and approved by the relevant authorities. There are several such sites around Aberdeen City. If you do find bird feeders in 'unusual' places then they...
