    c. 60 Pink-footed Geese south over Hazlewood School yesterday were my first of the autumn. On Saturday watched a juv Gannet come in over the city centre from the west and head out into the harbour...I wonder where it had been?

Thanks for the tip off Caper - amazed at the lack of rat and house mouse records! I see quite a lot of mammals (dead and alive) from the bike in the shire, need to start recording them!

Popped into the Blackdog/Murcar hood this arvo. There was a big congregation of Scoter off Murcar, but many were fairly distant. Saw 2-3 drake Surfies, about 10 Velvet and the strange all yellow/orange billed Scoter that has been kicking around lately. Couldn't find the Black Scoter.

I believe it was still around on Sunday, although I haven't yet connected myself. The Scoters have been widely dispersed when I have visited and we have been suffering from quite a lot of poor visibility, which probably explains the intermittent sightings. As I type I can't see much beyond 1/4...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I popped into Murcar this evening. The light was excellent and the Scoter and Eider flocks very close. A drake Surf Scoter was giving great views, as were about 20 Velvets. I couldn't find the King Eider, although I was concentrating on the Scoter. Other interesting birds; 5 Red-throated...

Netherley is a good call, heard one from the road there last year as I cycled through in late April. Had to stop to figure out if it was an echo of my freewheel whirring!

Hi Danny, hopefully someone will drop in with some good gen. In the meantime...I've been listening for Grasshopper Warblers around the periphery of the city in the evening lately without finding any. I've tried Inchgarth, which I believe is a regular location and various other sites that look...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I popped into Murcar today early afternoon. The drake King Eider was on the beach with a small eider flock, thankfully it wasn't in the much bigger congregation of eiders I could see further north towards Blackdog. Offshore there were several hundred Common Scoters, about ten Velvets, one...

I had a fab bike ride up Cairn o' Mount from Banchory and back tonight. Heard a gropper very close to the road just into the moor. Then I was escorted up the road for about a mile by a Short-eared Owl, which was replaced by another closer to the summit. The owls were actually rather handy...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Great stuff! There are echos of the past all over the area, in the remaining heather and bog areas and the stone cairns and walls; I have found it a fascinating place to wander over. Tullos Hill is being further squeezed now by the continuation of the Altens industrial site pretty much to the...

Good call fella, clearly they get similar migrants etc..and I suspect that people tune into the Aberdeen thread more for the shire news then the ramblings of urban birders!

Maybe we need a 'Gramps Appreciation Thread'? ;-) Must be some great birds missed in these places...I always fancy Kincorth Hill for something like a Red-foot or a shrike...

The fence is unbelievable and total overkill. The cost must have been staggering. I stopped walking there for a while after it went up, but have got used to it. There doesn't seem any way out to the east now. Tullos Hill is defo known as the gramps by many people, see e.g...

I'm sorry Angus, clearly what I meant to post was: "The avian migrant assemblage present at the Aberdeen City (UK) locality colloquially known as 'The Gramps', but more accurately known as the former East Tullos landfill site, in the post-meridian period of this day included one (1) Ring Ouzel...

I don't remember seeing any deer today, but there were several around last week that had got inside the fenced off corridor that contains the landfill vents...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I had an interesting walk on the gramps this afternoon. A flock of 6 stock doves were roaming the area widely, later a flock of 4 went through. never seen them here before. A fine pair of ring ouzels were feeding on sodden grass. As I walked past they flew into bushes and joined at least 3...

Great timing - kids in bed, 1/2 hour or so usable light left and only a mile down the road!

Just back from seeing them - wow! Great find Danny and thanks for getting the news out peeps! Think the ring is white LR8?

Visiting birder Gert Corfield saw a yellow wagtail by the dee at Maryculter early this morning. I had a look for it at late am with no luck. Looks like a great area for one with damp meadows horse paddocks etc. I did see a smart White Wagtail and my first Common Sandpipers of the year.

Booted a Short-eared Owl on the gramps this arvo...it went up for a while and then seemed to come down nearby, so I left it in peace.

I popped up to Scotstown Moor this evening to look for the reported Great Grey Shrike. A massive hail shower initially hampered efforts and I was just about giving up when a newly arrived birder found the shrike on the east side of the moor in the trees backing on gardens. We then had some...
