The Bluetail is still around and I took some pictures of it this morning.

Well, actually didn't have to rush in for anything today, so I was able to use a bit of leeway ;).

A surprisingly interesting walk to work today. There had been some reports of Waxwings in St Peter's Cemetery so I thought I would pop in and have a look for them, since it's on my way. I had just arrived there when a few distant people started shouting over to me. I wondered what they were up...

Nice account - it's a while since I've been down that way. The bird in the photo is definitely a Red-throated Diver.

I actually try to avoid going in as much as possible! I might try and get out there a bit if I get the chance. It's a nice walk and is good for Otters and Dippers.

Maybe, though I'm totally sure. I guess it could be migrating further north than Scotland.

Skuas definitely migrate overland to an extent. My best guess is that it would be taking a short cut up to the Moray Firth via the Dee and maybe the Spey.

I had a look along Aberdeen Beach today, before heading up along the Don to Seaton Park. Off the beach were four Long-tailed Ducks, 20 Common Scoter and three Red-breasted Mergansers. Three Purple Sandpipers and seven Sanderling were along the shore. Around Donmouth there were five Little...

I think you definitely need a scope to have any realistic chance, particularly of the Black Scoter. It's useful to have a scope that can zoom up to at least 40x as well. The birds aren't always really distant but are probably at best going to be about 500 metres away. Some scoters will probably...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I headed north today to Blackdog. At this time of year, there are often large numbers of moulting seaduck and these often attract more unusual species. Searching through the thousands of Common Scoters and Eiders can take a while but I fairly quickly managed to pick out the drake Black Scoter...

Reported on WhatsApp by Tom Kirkpatrick. 'It was in the small lane between the two streets at the top of the grassy area'.

Cheers Andy. I've put out news on the WhatsApp and also on Twitter. It's on Birdguides now. Hope it sticks around!

I know there's a Facebook group, although I'm not on that myself. I can put it out on the local WhatsApp group if you're not on it. I assume it was in Peterhead earlier today? It might be good to know roughly what time. Birdguides and others generally pick up on stuff put out on local news...

Sensational stuff Andy! Do you want to put the news out on local services? You can be a bit vague about the location if you don't want a bunch of birders showing up at your house. I'm sure people will be interested to hear about the record.

Nice! It looks like a 3rd calendar year bird with the pale eye. They can get very pale by this time of the year.

Yesterday, I had an exploratory wander around the north of the city. This began with my first ever visit to Scotstown Moor. It's quite a pleasant area for a stroll with some interesting boggy, scrubby habitat. Birds included a couple of singing Garden Warblers and a Redpoll. The boggy pools held...

I was out and about again this weekend. Yesterday was pretty pleasant with good, though still chilly, weather. My first stop was at Fyvie Loch, which I'd never been to before. It's a very pleasant spot for a wander. The marshy field and pools on the way in held Redshank and a few other common...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

On Monday 19th I stayed a bit closer to home. My first port of call was the Ythan Estuary. A female Velvet Scoter was among the Eiders around the river mouth. There were plenty of Sandwich Terns and two Common Terns, probably newly in, were resting on the shore with them. Both Bar-tailed and...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

On Sunday 18th I travelled northwest towards the Moray coast. My first stop was a little bit closer at Loch of Skene. Shortly before I left home, a report came in from Hugh Addlesee of three Ring-necked Ducks on the loch. I arrived at the eastern end and headed through the woods to the shore. I...

On Saturday 17th I headed further up Deeside. I began at Dinnet Oakwood, which was lovely as always. It was fairly busy with birds too and I had some good views of Jays. On the nearby river were another pair of Common Sandpipers, as well as Grey Wagtail and Dipper. A Red Squirrel was hopping...

I've had an interesting few days 'on holiday' in Aberdeenshire. This translates to me hiring a car for a bit and travelling to places I don't go to that often (i.e. that aren't Girdle Ness). On Friday 16th, I headed off late in the afternoon to Inchgarth, which is always a pleasant spot on a...
