A good grilling by Dave's standards is probably about 8 hours at a guess. You are spot on with knowing the calls/song that is vital for picking up a lot of the stuff, particularly during migration periods.Enjoy the learning process, slowly, slowly things start to fall into place.:t:

Maybe I should bring down some of mine next time, we could crack the 100 species barrier?

Had an hour this morning. 42 Teal, 4 Gadwall, 4 Tuftie, 1 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 4 Moorhen, 1 Coot, 1 Little Grebe on river, Sprawk, Buzzard, 3 Reed Bunt, 2 Skylark west, Siskin, GSW drumming No sign of any Bittern but who knows, you could stand there for hours and still miss them!

Had half an hour down the lane today. Little of note but I did hear a Water Rail near the top pool. 35 Teal on the main pool with a female Pochard and a male Tufted. A couple of Buzzards over also.

...and didn't you have a large number over the river gardens a year or two ago?

Well done all I think Blackwit would be a Wyver 1st for me.

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

Hi all I didn't want to cast any doubt on the authenticity of the record, the bird was seen by very experienced birders and with or without the photos (which clearly show a spotted crake) would have been accepted by the records committee. I just wish I could have got a photo on monday. Anyway...

I'm the worlds worst I can talk myself out of anything. Anyway I am still calling it the Crake even if it was a Water Rail.8-P

Dave rang me later on Monday night to ask if we could have been mistaken as WR had been seen. It's at moments like that you start to doubt yourself, but that bill was clearly short and stubby.

    Lee Evans indeed.

Brownie hero worshiping George Michael? I believe the great one had the audacity to question our record and suggest it was a juv Water Rail.;)

And the bugger put Usain Bolt to shame.

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

But you would have to have been looking in the right place between 11:45 and 11:46;);)

Phil, the spot flys were near the gate where most of the cars park, Whinchats from the mound.

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

Not strictly true Dave, it was one of the Carsi volunteers.
  23. Clive A

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

Yes Dave, I was down there at 08:30 and it didn't show until 11:45 and then for about a minute and no further sign by 15:30. Also 4 Spot Flys and 3 Whinchat.

Willow Tit again, nice one (should have posted it on the Wyver thread rather than the Derbyshire one!!)
