I'd agree. The yellow globe will attract insects but the deep purple variety (davidii?) has far more attractiveness especially for late summer broods of butterflies. I have both of these plus a "wild" standard. If you're having just the one then go for the very dark deep purple specimen.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thank you HD for the situation report that portrays these recent sightings. Hopefully this butterfly's range will expand naturally into Norfolk.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Purple emperors reported at two North Norfolk sites during the last week. How likely are these to be part of a relic population in the county? Despite the 2018 increase in sightings nationally of this much sought after species, is it highly likely that these individuals are indeed from a...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Are butterfly numbers up for this year despite the desperately prolonged arctic conditions earlier? No doubt this heatwave is beneficial to some species but are overall numbers up? I haven't seen many Large Whites but a Wall Brown a fortnight ago was a surprise visitor to the garden.

Single clouded yellow whizzed S.W. across the reserve 10 minutes ago, near to the central hides (1235hrs). And at 1400, Phil F showed me a photograph of a chalkhill blue which had just alighted briefly near the picnic benches - spreading out from Warham Greens perhaps?

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Collins suggests that the single flight period (Univoltine) is between March - June, with the occassional July sighting. Given that nature is somewhat delayed this year, then factoring this, period, survival rates and my posting should result in one being reported today.
