    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I have just seen four Painted Ladies in my garden in Hopton (I can't remember the last time I saw one there.) Is there a lot of them about at the moment or was I just in the right place at the right time? Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I photographed this Holly Blue in my garden today. It was spending a lot of time on my little weeping Cotoneaster tree and in this photograph appears to be laying an egg on it. Is this case and, if so, is it an unusual plant to choose? Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Yes. Dr Martin George is a respected ecologist and author, now retired. If he is about and in a talkative mood, he is a mine of information about Swallowtails and other wildlife. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

The garden at Marsh Cottage is usually a safe bet (ask at reception) although they are all over the reserve at the moment. They have been using the flower garden at the reception recently and have been seen in the overflow car park too. Good luck. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

A Swallowtail was seen by the boardwalk at Strumpshaw today, not by me unfortunately! There were huge numbers of very fresh looking Brimstones and Orange Tips there today, as well as a few Peacocks and extremely faded Small Tortoiseshells. Ron

Small Copper today on the heath at Winterton. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks Steve. It was only about a metre away and it definitely wasn't a Brimstone. It had black(ish) tips on the top sides of the wings and a couple spots underneath. My partner Lynn noticed it first and said "Oh look, a Cabbage White." I wish I had taken a photograph now but at the time I...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Four Small Tortoiseshells and a Comma in my garden in Hopton this morning and then later at Strumpshaw large numbers of Brimstones and Small Tortoiseshells. Also along the Buckenham road at Strumpshaw, a White which looked like a Large White to me. A bit of research suggests that these are...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

At last there seems to be an increase in the number of Red Admirals around, with about half-a-dozen splendid examples at Strumpshaw on Sunday. There were also double figure numbers of very bright Commas, a couple of Speckled Woods and a few very smart Tortoiseshells. Ron

There is a church opposite us at work with a Buddleia growing out of the wall about 20 feet up in the air. It is covered with Tortoiseshells and Whites at the moment but, hallelujah, I have just seen my first Painted Lady of the year on it. Now where's that Clouded Yellow? Ron

We have a herb tub in the garden in Gorleston and the Marjoram is in flower at the moment. Over the weekend there were Gatekeepers nectaring on it continuously, with up to four feeding there at a time. I have never seen any in the garden before this year. Ron

I am very sorry to hear that you have been so ill, Tideliner, but I am pleased to hear that you are on the road to recovery. I am amazed to hear that you have been so unlucky finding Swallowtaild, given the amount of time that you have spent in their habitat. Hopefully next year will be much...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

It was butterfly heaven at Strumpshaw today with large numbers of many of the more common species. There were literally hundreds of pristine Peacocks, with a constant stream of them taking off from the paths in front of us. They were also all over the buddleia bushes which are in flower now...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks James. I have had a look at some Garden Tiger Moth caterpillar photos and you are right. I haven't seen one for a few years and I can't remember them being quite so big. Thanks. Ron

A couple of pics of the Fox Moth caterpillar. Actually I wouldn't mind confirmation of the ID as the photos on Google images seem to vary wildly. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

There were Small Tortoiseshells everywhere at Strumpshaw yesterday, most of them minty fresh. Also 7 Meadow Browns and 2 Brimstones. I also enjoyed watching a large and furry Fox Moth caterpillar undulating its way across the path on the Lackford Run. Edit. Fox Moth caterpillar now identified...

We had a Speckled Wood in the garden in Gorleston this afternoon. It was nectaring on purple Sage flowers. I can't remember the last time I saw a Speckled Wood here, if ever. Ron

They certainly know how to pick the right background to blend in. A very interesting shot Chris. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I saw my first three Swallowtails of the year at Strumpshaw today. The first was a quick glimpse of one disappearing into the reeds on the Lackford Run but later we enjoyed prolonged views of two more in the little clearing between Marsh Cottage and the crop field. They were mainly feeding on...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks James, that is extremely helpful. From what you have said, and from looking at your examples, I am sure that the butterflies passing through the garden on Sunday were Holly Blues, as were most of the ones at Strumpshaw yesterday. I did see at least one with brown under the wings...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Three Blue butterflies in the garden at Gorleston yesterday and lots of them at Strumpshaw today. Serious question: how can you identify what sort they are when they don't settle or is it a question of knowing what should be on the wing at a certain time? I didnt see any Swallowtails today but...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks Simon. I will have to check out some photos of Garlic Mustard. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

At Strumpshaw on Sunday there were large numbers of Orange Tips and Peacocks and quite a few Brimstones. I spent most of the day trying to get a photograph of an Orange Tip but none of them would settle. Eventually one landed and proceeded to nectar on a white flowered plant. I took some shots...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Plenty of Peacocks and Small Tortoiseshells at Strumpshaw yesterday, plus two Orange Tips circling around each other - my first of the year. No Brimstones this week, though. Ron

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Small Tortoiseshells are the only butterflies that I have seen this year and I have spotted plenty of them, so hopefully, yes. Ron
