What effect do you think this will have on the wildlife as in Little Grebes etc? Will they just move further down the canal past high peak junction? I find this paragraph funny... "There are also plans to cut back trees along the canal to reduce the level of shading – which is harmful to the...

We had a little look mid-afternoon but couldn't emulate the 13 from this morning. We did have 5 distant in the trees above the castle. 2 did fly towards us and land in a tree near the toilets but soon flew back.

And so begins a Winter of Hawfinch. Incidentally, the first record in 2010 was November 7th so this years record is the latest for a couple of years. In the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 it wasn't until December that the first Hawfinch was reported.

Nice one. Was thinking about coming down on my bike but I've currently got the Eartha Kitts so I think I'll give it a miss. For anybody thinking of getting down for the Hawfinches then hurry up. Just checking on records and in recent years the latest March record is 22nd. So probably just over a...

It's all very well sitting in the car waiting for them to drop down below the large beech tree in the rugby club car park. But It's not that often the birds actually do that. More often than not they are somewhere else. So whilst everybody is sitting in the car waiting, half a dozen birds will...

15? Wow, just a quick check reveals that's the best count since 2009. Might have to get myself down there with Clive tomorrow morning. Still not managed to see any this year.

Couple of hours down Cromford today. Had a look around for Hawfinch first thing without any joy so went looking for Dipper. Tried around the first bridge but didn't see any so walked along the river for a while and still nothing apart from a Little Grebe. Came back to the first bridge to find a...

That is a surprise. I'd have thought there would have been little in the way of water there.

    Cromford Canal, Derbyshire

The best place lately is around the castle entrance or in trees on the hillside behind the castle. I've not heard of many records this winter in the church grounds, that's not to say they haven't been there though. Edit: In fact, just looking at Bird Guides and 5 have been seen this morning at...

A good count of 12 there, Clive. I gather you know but they were in trees on the hillside in Willersley Castle grounds.
