    Shropshire Birding

Lesser Redpoll singing early this morning in our garden here at Coton Hill. No idea if that's breeding nearby.

    Shropshire Birding

Walked from Bridges up onto the Long Mynd and back down again today - shame it was so damned cold but saw Cuckoo, pair of Dippers, 6+ each of Common Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Willow Warbler on territory and Curlew calling in the fields. Seems to be more Lesser Black-backed Gulls around...

5 Swifts around the house at Coton Hill this evening. Unfortunately looks like the Beeater has moved on - no further reports this afternoon. Patrick

Look forward to getting your updates Chris - best of luck for the list this year! A male Blackcap has joined the female in the garden here at Coton Hill. A pair of Goosanders flew over at lunchtime too on their way back to the river. Cheers, Patrick

Despite the snow, the female Blackcap at Coton Hill, Shrewsbury is still around, and this morning was in the ivy-covered tree by the slipway opposite Benbow Quay.

    Shropshire Birding

Im currently sat watching the male Green-winged Teal at Polemere, which is showing well now it's woken up. Smart bird, and plenty of other duck here to keep it company.

    Shropshire Birding

Excellent pictures Julie! A very impressive day at the S-Y confluence with the residual floods seemingly perfect for dabbling duck. Many Teal and Wigeon with smaller numbers of Pintail and Shoveler and a single Goldeneye. Also hordes of Finches and Buntings in the hedges. Top stuff, makes the...

    Shropshire Birding

Big increase in Goosander numbers on the river this morning, with 17 displaying just downstream from Grey Friars Bridge. Very smart in the morning sunshine and seemingly expert at avoiding amateur rowers.

    Shropshire Birding

Good work Chris! What is your 'home to work' on, and how do you cope with those silhouetted fly-over Gulls first thing in the morning? Must be a Yellow-legged in there somewhere! Talking of the office, we have a wintering Green Sandpiper here at Mytton Mill, along with a juvenile Water Rail...

    Shropshire Birding

Greetings Chris and all Female Blackcap feeding on a fat ball in the garden here too and quite aggressive. It's WeBS count weekend this weekend. There's been a Spotted Redshank recently near the Royal Hill which would be a very unseasonal addition to the WeBS count and a Shropshire tick for...

    Shropshire Birding

Those still in need of a Waxwing experience could do no better than check the small garden opposite Greenfields Post Office on Ellesmere Road in Shrewsbury, where more than 50 were stripping the only tree of berries on Saturday and some were still there this morning. Up to 5 Coal Tits together...

    Shropshire Birding

Hello all, Hoopoe today at Attingham Hall then flew towards Venus Pool apparently (on pager). I know no more but worth keeping a look out.

    Shropshire Birding

Alex Park at The Stiperstones car park (sign posted) and walk up towards the ridge and northwards towards The Devil's Chair. The Grouse will be somewhere around there.

2 Crossbills flew east over my allotment in Greenfields, Shrewsbury, Saturday lunchtime. All the best, Patrick

    Shropshire Birding

The Long Mynd and The Striperstones are both worth trying for Red Grouse ( they are there but not the best time of year though). Nearby, the Shropshire Way at Bridges is good for Dipper (as is Longner on the A49 but water levels are high at present). Venus Pool might be good for Tree Sparrow -...

    Shropshire Birding

Greetings all, A new breeding record this year at Mytton Mill - a female Mandarin with 2 half-grown young on the river there this afternoon. There's been talk on the Yahoo group of breeding Siskins around Shropshire - there's been birds around Coton Hill, Shrewsbury all 'summer', usually in...

    Shropshire Birding

Hello all! As we were driving along the M54 past Priorslee at 5.30pm today, an Osprey flew low eastwards over the motorway from the lake. Smart. Cheers, Patrick

    Shropshire Birding

Good bird. Rained overnight, so hopefully it's stayed - could start to get wet underfoot for anyone who is going.

    Shropshire Birding

The first autumn parties of Siskins moving south over the office this morning.

    Shropshire Birding

We also had an evening trip to VP on Tuesday to check out the Marsh Sand report, although we were not expecting much joy. 4 Green Sandpipers, 1 Ringed Plover and a Little Egret was all that was of note there by 6.30pm. Cheers, Patrick
