Have read your blog and looks like you had a good day. Seeing two Jack Snipe for a start, and three Med Gulls in a morning visit is exceptional. Any photos? Steve (the county recorder)

Lockington Gravel Pits aka Warren Lane To save anybody wasting their time, what was the very attractive (to waders) pit alongside Warren Lane has now been pumped out and filled with earth. This was always the owner's plan, and thanks to them for agreeing to delay the final work for two years to...

Now is a good time to look for wild geese in the Soar valley as there are plenty of flooded and waterlogged meadows suitable for pulling in odd Pink-feet, White-fronts or even a Bean or Brent. Checking carefully through the flocks of feral Greylags is a good tip. Steve

A good start at Swithland Res too, with the nine-day Black-throated Diver joined by both a Shag and a male Smew this afternoon. Still one Scaup, three Goosanders and five Little Egrets. Steve

2013 records If anyone still has 2013 local rarity descriptions to send me can they please do it as soon as possible. There are quite a few reports that are as yet unsubstantiated, such as four of the five Yellow-browed Warblers. If you are unsure whether a submission is needed for a...

For the north arm park along the private road that forks off the Hambleton road: unless you are there before 8.45 there will be a line of cars already. Walk to the end and through the metal gate, carry on to the scrubby area past the end of the road. Long-tailed Ducks usually out to the left...

Possibly a new county record for number of species of ducks seen at a county site in one day yesterday - Terry Sherwood and I saw 18 species at Rutland Water. Nothing surprising, we knew they were all there and it was just a case of finding them all. Pity we could not find a Red-crested Pochard...

No - he just showed it to one other visitor. I need to firm up the record so hopefully we will be able to make contact. Steve

Red-backed Shrike at Rutland Water August 10th If anyone knows the observer/photographer, a P J Flatton, perhaps you could ask him to contact either me (as county recorder) or the Rutland Water reserve. Steve

Easy access. Park in the carpark at the village end of the dam and just head along the main footpath which hugs the side of the arm where the heron is. Steve

Further to what Dave has said, the flat hill immediately west of Mountsorrel, known as Broad Hill and actually a capped off landfill site, has the potential to turn up migrants in the same way as Bardon Hill and Beacon Hill. It could also be a useful vismig site if you are that way inclined. As...

The open heathland is mainly open access land but this does not include any fields or the woodland. There is a waymarked path around the reserve that you are recommended to follow. It is not particularly good for birds at this time of year. You might get lucky and find a few Crossbills (I have...

Hopefully some birds will stay around during the snow, but I don't think the flocks of Skylarks and Linnets will stand much chance after yesterday. Those are the first Woodcocks anyone has mentioned this year Neil - takes the county yearlist up to 129. Steve

The two RSPB reserves on the Lincolnshire shore of the Wash, Freiston and Frampton, are within easy reach of Oakham for a half day - maybe an hour and a half each way. North Norfolk, with Titchwell and Snettisham RSPB reserves, is a little further but feasible for a full day trip. Both these...

Albert Village Lake is worth a visit at the moment: yesterday two of us between us saw adult Glaucous Gull, 4 Caspian Gulls (first-winter, 4th winter and 2 adults) and at least five Yellow-leggeds. Steve

Excellent day at Rutland Water today, topped off by a new-in Great Northern Diver that I managed to see just before the light faded - thanks Terry M. Not many inland sites could produce a November list of 92 species which is what I saw today. Highlights were a cracking female Long-tailed Duck...

Yesterday (Thursday) was by far the best day so far this autumn for Meadow Pipits - 808 over Deans Lane. Still waiting for any winter thrushes at all though. Steve

The Temminck's is still at Swithland but very easy to miss - as I have done on two visits this week. When it is seen it is always on the bit of shore between the piled up stones and the rocky promontory, often near a narrow log on the shore. It would be a good New Year's day bird..... Steve

Finding a Temmink's Stint at Swithland Reservoir this morning rounded off a good local week with some surprising new arrivals for the time of year Great White Egret at Frisby and Priory Water Long-tailed Duck at Rutland Water Grey Phalarope also at Rutland Water The Temminck's could well be the...

Today's small wader might just have been a Temminck's of course. The Beans were only there, or known to be there, for about 90 minutes. But I know what you mean. Steve

That ringed Ross's Goose has been at Watermead, along with the itinerant intermediate phase Snow Goose, off and on for ages. Easy to overlook them though, with loads of white Greylags everywhere. Steve
