Hooded Crow Hooded Crow (very rare bird in Leics & Rutland) in the sheep fields behind the dam at Rutland Water in the evening of the 6th May and early morning only of the 7th. Interestingly I had a Hoodie look alike fly across the road in front of me near Tilton on the Hill about three weeks...

The Linnet flock is still being sustained by the weedy field. Also today 50+ Skylark and 26 Waxwing flew over later afternoon. The combined seed eating flock is very mobile but often comes close. There must be the potential for something good in there.

The Linnets are still there Steve. Thankfully the 'weeds' are tall and stand well clear of the snow. There looks to be plenty of food and although no Twite there were Redpoll and Reed Bunting in there today so could be a magnet for disconnected individuals of other species. Interestingly the...

There are some impressive cold weather things going on over here around Whetstone. Yesterday a flock of 70 + skylark followed today with a flock of 245 Linnet in the weedy field next to us on Springwell Lane. I'll be checking it for Twite once the snow stops. I took a pic of the Linnets when...

Great Skua Thanks to Steve's ever vigilant watch and Andy's instant Tweeting a few Skua-less county birders (like me) were able to catch up with Bonxie at Swithland Res. It had apparently killed a Lesser Black-backed Gull and then feasted on the carcass. I've ringed a few LBG's and they are no...

Too windy today! Very little passing overhead. A few larks and pipits and that's it.

Vis Migging today I tried a new spot today near home (Whetstone). Really good passage this morning:- Meadow Pipits, alba Wagatils (and the odd Grey), Skylarks and finches. Seems like a SW breeze is perfect but clear skies meant that a lot of stuff was quite high. If it performs again I may even...

Just for completeness and rather self consciously following up my own question, ... all that's known is the juv Gannet flew through being mobbed by gulls and headed off towards Uppingham probably over flying the Falcon Hotel which does a very nice lunch and a decent pint:)

There are so many alternative repositories for information that folks are probably unlikely to cross post. For RW the LROS site often has a daily summary http://www.lros.org.uk/News.htm Tim 'tweets' live from the field. tim appleton@Rutlandbirds If there is anything special Andy will...

Thanks Dave Sorry it didn't give you a fighting chance. Even a TS in November would be a good bird but this could have been the one that got away! By the way, hope the scumbags who ruined your week bump in to PC plod sometime soon.

If L&R was a roll of sticking tape, I'd throw it away Basically nothing is sticking in L&R. I could go back but just in the recent past 1. Broad-billed Sand (gone in 60 seconds) 2. Dotterel (flushed by the RAF as I was walking up to it) 3. Glossy Ibis (part of a day but then off to spend...

Bean Geese Thanks for the link, and the warning! No geese today but it turns out they were not at Bennion Pools but in fields 'near' Bennion Pools. The fields are to the north of where Redruth Road ends. For some inexplicable reason what is clearly signed 'Redruth Road' is displayed as Bevan...

Bean Geese Two Bean Geese reported at Bennion Pools Leicester (along with Pink Foot and White Front!). Does anyone have a link for Redruth Road (which is apparently the place to view from) as it doesn't appear on any maps I have? thanks

Snow Bunting Now two Snow Bunting at Longmoor Lake near Normanton le Heath. As Andy has pointed out on the LROS web site, the problem with OS and indeed Google Earth is that the lake itself doesn't appear because it's so new. When I left at 13:15 the birds were around the southern end of the...

report of male R F Falcon Report of male RFF Kegworth/Long Whatton last Friday is very intriguing (LROS web site). Remember what turned out to Amur Falcon at Tohill Low Res, Yorks in 2008? Any late 'RFF' may well be something more interesting especially after the run of recent eastern goodies.

This is just to place to ask or discuss anything related to the two counties, so thanks for your question. Egyptian Geese are now resident and doing quite well as a breeding bird. The latest LROS report for 2008 quotes monthly totals for Rutland Water ranging from 26 in the winter to a maximum...

Well I never, South Kilworth just a day later. Thanks to Chris Hubbard for following up the story and relocating the bird as it flew past him near the butchers shop mid afternoon. The finder had been out running when it flew by him earlier around 10:30 at the other end of the village. It then...
