That's more like it! You may wish to change 'Latin' name to 'Scientific' name if you want to be strictly accurate (a lot of the names are derived from Greek as well as Latin)

There are a number of anomalies in that Rutland Water list, Adrian. Australian Shelduck and Emperor Goose, for instance won't get onto any 'proper' list and there are a lot of duplications boosting the total because of alternative names for the same species - Little Plover/Little-ringed Plover...

The original twitter message of an 'unconfirmed' report seemed a bit vague. It'll be interesting to hear the details of the sighting and let's hope there's a good description submitted.

Welcome to Birdforum, Lee. This article may be of interest to you: http://www.lros.org.uk/burbage.htm It was compiled a few years ago but the info is basically still sound, though some stuff like Willow Tit, Water Voles and White-letter Hairstreak butterflies are a bit difficult to find...

An Avocet for most of the day at Brascote Pits was the first decent bird at this site for a while and a good record for this side of the county. Still present until 7:45pm at least as well as a Wheatear (the first one I've bumped into this spring!).

Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler are proving a bit damned elusive, though!

I tried again yesterday morning for a better photo on the strength of the weather forecast - unfortunately, the sun never really broke through the clouds, so grey skies again! The flock seems to be dispersing more now and heading off in various directions. Anyone looking for them might try the...

They would have been even more enjoyable in sunshine rather than fog - and if the local Mistle Thrush had allowed them to settle for more than a couple of seconds at a time! At least 168 counted.

There was a quite noticeable fall of the commoner warblers at Brascote Pits yesterday morning - mainly Chiff/Willows, Blackcaps and Whitethroats feeding on the sheltered side of several hedges but not standing still for long. Also, a Tree Pipit (any other sightings at this site?).

Flew off north about 19:30 apparently. Also of interest in the county is the Wood Warbler still at Beacon Hill - is this the first 'stayer' since the Swithland Wood bird in 2003?

It's only a problem if a male does join it at this time of year. More than likely, it'll just move on. It's a good bird for this location. The last one there wasn't reported at the time even though it was seen away from the breeding season. A good find for you anyway!

Female Black Redstarts are perhaps not the most striking of birds but they are quite uncommon in Leicestershire. If it should be joined by a male, remember that it is a rare breeding species in the UK and just send a PM to Steve Lister rather than put out the info.

A rare 'bird' appearing out of the haze in the Leicestershire skies yesterday morning ;):

A Whimbrel and a White Wagtail at Brascote Pits this morning. The Whimbrel flew off northwards just before midday and the wagtail melted away into the site somewhere...

I heard one a few weeks ago when I was in Sheepy Wood. They've certainly colonised the county recently. This morning, I was just a few miles away from Hinckley watching Raven several Buzzards and a pair of Peregrines (all in the air at the same time at one point) - not many years ago, we'd have...

Tree Sparrows do seem to respond to feeding and nest-box erecting - Fosse Meadows used to be my local patch years ago before it was a nature park and there were never many around (certainly not 43 or more), but other species, such as Willow Tit haven't benefited from any protection afforded by...

    Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches

For anyone interested, there were at least 43 Tree Sparrows around the feeders in the car park at Fosse Meadows this morning

I can't offer much more than that on the Croft/Narborough bird, either. There was no way we could get any closer without disturbing the bird (or trespassing!) to obtain a detailed view or better photos. You can paste the above description onto a report form if you like to save making one out ;)...

Not to mention Sheepy Magna/Parva as well. Considering how big and white they are, I wonder where they hide away for the majority of the time when they're not reported.

I wonder just how many/few GW Egrets are around in the county - it would be nice to get simultaneous sightings of two just to prove there's more than one bird involved (none seen in the Croft area this morning)

    Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches

The Great White Egret seen on and off around the Croft area was relocated this morning. Just inside the parish boundary of Narborough at SP525965 at Flash Farm, next to the River Soar. Viewable from the boardwalk at the bottom of Huncote Embankment at the southern end. Somewhat distantly;)...

Might be worth trying a few likely-looking sites anywhere else, then, just to see what's around. I had a Red Kite this afternoon drifting around Burbage Common - still quite a scarce bird locally, though not newsworthy enough for LROS news page these days. ;) Very grotty light conditions so no...

Nice to see somewhere other than Great Easton getting Short-eared Owls for a change! Has it been a good 'vole year' I wonder?
