Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

At least 2 house martins ( and swallow ) with a few sand martins at Redesmere this pm. The house martins beat my earliest ever record by 5 days ( been keeping records since 1976 ! ) Not claiming any sort of record - I'm sure others will beat that , but it is significantly early for round here...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Well, I just checked my notes from last year, and I had a flock of 30+ in Winwick. At the time I thought that was Lancs, but checking the CAWOS site shows it was just in Cheshire. I know my group weren't the only folk who saw them - they were reported by a local patch-worker on the Manchester...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Had a good flock of feeding corn buntings yesterday along the Glazebrook to Culcheth road. I'd estimate 50 , but they were unviewable on the deck. Also yellowhammer, reed bunting and skylarks, with a couple of Grey partridge in the same field. Won't give precise location details, but a flock...

The snow brought more birds than usual to my feeders in Macc today and I was really pleased to have a flock of 25 brambling for over an hour. There have been a couple at Rudyard recently but hadn't seen any others round here this winter.

The redhead smew was still present this morning on a pit at Newchurch common. Took me a while to find the site - best way in seems to be from Nova Scotia lane / Sandy lane then walk north west along the track ( Overdale lane ? ). The bird is on the large pit on the right along with plenty of...

Went up to Macc forest at midday to buy the Christmas tree, and heard a flock of crossbills go over. Given the rarer crossbills around the country, must be worth a look ? Sadly , I Had no binos with me so unable to chase them up myself today.

There can surely be no doubt that this has been the worst March for summer migrants ever here in Cheshire. Would have expected around 6 species in a normal March but only managed 2. Have also had chiff and blackcap but I didn't count them as migrants as not singing.

Not sure ! I was driving at the time. It was fairly low and being mobbed by jackdaws. Checked the sky to the west when I got home 5 mins later but no sign.

I suppose that depends on the area you are talking about. I guess you mean East Cheshire authority (county) ? I think you're up in the north of that ? Certainly round this end of the county, I haven't heard of more than the occasional "rumour" and know nobody who's seen one for years and years.

Made up this afternoon to see a bird I haven't seen round here ( that's the Macc area ) for 30 years. Was out round the lanes looking for little owls and pulled up at a site where I've seen them in the past. Got out of the car and immediately saw a barn owl hunting 100 yards away. I know...

That's interesting . Was walking round Dunham Massey yesterday about 1pm when I saw what I assumed was a goshawk flying high up. Definitely a hawk and seemed buzzard size. I was watching a pair of goshawk displaying ( not in Cheshire ) only a few days ago so I'm confident it wasn't a sparrow...
