Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

With you 100% Dave. I'd go one step further and campaign to stop all 'constant effort' ringing which is undertaken by birders who have outgrown the hobby of just watching birds and is 'authorised' by the BTO who are just hungry to obtain data for data's sake. In reply to Jane's comment - there...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

How annoying! Almost as annoying in fact as those self-righteous individuals who feel justified in trapping common resident birds, handling them and then fitting them with rings.

Guys, apologies in advance. I know I'm posting this in the wrong place but I needed to reach as many local birders as possible before the weekend. I've just provisionally accepted a trade-in offer on my immaculate Zeiss Victory 8x42 T*FL bins but if anyone is prepared to offer me £750 they're...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

The last couple of evenings have seen truly impressive numbers of Jackdaws commuting back to roost through our village. They just kept coming and coming. I did a count (obviously very rough) a few years ago around new year and got 2,400. I feel sure there were nearer 4,000 this time. Think I'll...

7 Waxwings in Rainow today. First heard and then seen from my house but no garden visit yet despite the juicy Cotoneaster and Pyracantha berries just waiting for them.

Macclesfield Waxwings Decided to give the waxwings a miss today and to start me Xmas shopping. But the waxies were having none of it. Less than 5 minutes from parking the car and a flock flew over my head. Found 37 by Christ Church from where they moved onto the roof of Al Panino cafe on...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

There were 50+ opposite the Albion pub in Macc this morning but they wouldn't settle even though there are still loads of yellow rowan berries left. It looks a great place to try for good photos with the sun in exactly the right place. But out of all the many houses in this area, the one with...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Macclesfield is suddenly Waxwing city again. Even got one down the road from my house in Rainow this morning. 60 or so behind Tile Giant at midday, desperately hungry for the few remaining berries and totally confiding. Managed to fire off one burst before a fly-over Sparrowhawk sent the flock...

Starling roost Took the wife down to see thousands of Starlings come into roost in Coward reedbed at Budworth Mere late afternoon. Thanks for the gen Vern. Like WOW |8)|. We just stood there with crazed gormless expressions on our faces watching the shapes and listening to the whooshing...

Still 12 Waxwings at B&Q in Macclesfield this morning, later feeding behind Tile Giant. Typical though - four of us stood in the sunshine for 3 hours armed with big telephotos yesterday hoping to get that perfect shot of the birds in the sun .... but they didn't turn up |:(| However, even the...

Hi D, The rowan trees they are favouring are the ones by the fence adjacent to Halfords, not the small ones in the centre near to the excavation. Unless they have now decided to dig that bit up as well. The sighting shown on RBA was before 9am, so well before the military parade. Even so...

9 Waxwings still at B&Q Macclesfield upto midday but no further sightings on Sunday to my knowledge. I'm told a Peregrine was seen flying over.

Certainly did CB but haven't sorted through them yet. Will post if there any really good ones. Did I miss you there this morning? Nos had risen to 9 by end of day.

Yes, good to meet you too Dave, and Peter also. In fact I did more talking than watching having met up with lots of guys I'd not seen since the last Waxwing 'twitches' a couple of years ago. :t: Nice image that Dave. You did well there as the light was very poor later on. Here's a few I took. P.

From memory there's not much in the way of Rowans - more Cotoneaster. In that locality I'm guessing they'd probably be more interested in the rowans at the back of the indoor market where there's plenty of berries. Crap location for watching them tho'.

Went back again later for the Macc Waxies (can't get enough me) and had trouble locating them. Finally found them where I'd left my car on B&Q car park! They were eating rowan berries this time.

Just been watching 5 Waxies near the centre of Macclesfield - the usual hotspot behind Tile Giant (Crossall Street). Bizarrely they seem more interested in flycatching from the TV aerials than eating the berries!

Yes possibly. However she did mention a parrot or parakeet in our brief conversation but that was in reference to a separate bird. She seemed quite knowledgeable.

Remember this? Well today I was out for a stroll from home when I was collared by an old lady. Seeing my bins she asked if I was a keen birder and proceeded to tell me she lived in Adlington and "a few weeks ago" she'd seen a Bee-eater near her home flying towards the Woodford BA site! That...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

The "benefit" you talk about is only appreciated by a few people. The rest of us nature lovers have no choice but to have our wild encounters completely spoiled by the incongruous sight of coloured rings on birds that we should be able to appreciate in their unadulterated glory. They've done...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Hi Sid, It's a shame that after your repeated efforts to connect with a Dipper you were denied a truly wild one and instead had to put up with an individual that had been branded 'property of the human race'. It really disturbs me that some people are taking it upon themselves to interfere with...

Just imagine - you're sat up in bed with a cuppa, watching a woodpecker in a nearby tree through the window when suddenly it's joined by a male Golden Oriole. Amazingly that's what happened to Mike Atkinson last week in Congleton. Mike's a very keen photographer (you may have seen his articles...
