Went up to the Boldon Lad after I saw the message but dipped on the Waxwings :( Headed over to West Pastures but it was very quiet - Yellowhammer, Robin, Long tailed Tit and very little else although did see a buzzard land in the fields just off the A19 while driving back.

Thanks for your help Martin. Didn't get a good look at it's legs and thought that it probably was a young black headed gull but I thought I would check with the experts :) Cheers Chris

Some photos from yesterday. Taken at distance with an ordinary digital so not exactly top quality. Can anyone give me a hand with identifying the gull in the foreground of the 'What's this?' photo? Is it just an immature Black headed gull? Seemed a lot smaller than the others and had different...

Great day in the sunshine today up north. Got really good views of a Whimbrel in the estuary at Alnmouth, been a while since I have seen one. Headed up to Holy Island and got the report of a white billed diver just as I got there. Very excited and headed for the point it was seen. No sign...

I tried sea watching for the first time the other day Degsy and really enjoyed it although a lot of the birds (which seem to be the rarer stuff) were out of range of my binoculars. Still had a very interesting couple of hours and did see a Manx Shearwater.

Brilliant days birding down at Blacktoft and then up to Tunstall and Tow Law. Met the lads at Blacktoft (after a cracking view of a Red Kite on the way down) and then stayed down there after they had been chased away by the bloke who went to Greece for his holidays...:-O Excellent sightings of...

Just back from a wander through Whitburn CP and then Trow. Birds have a great deal more sense than me and were mostly hiding and sheltering from the wind. Greenfinch and goldfinch about in the park as well as Reed Bunting, Linnet and a hunting female Sparrowhawk scaring the pigeons. Walked to...

Great evening at Lamesley after a really shocking day at work. Lots of Redshank about as well as about ten greylag. Plenty of Pied wagtails and got a great view of a Sparrowhawk taking down a wood pigeon and scaring the hell out of his mates. Four Little Ringed Plover present as well as quite a...

I know exactly where that is mate. That is my 'local patch' when I stay there as I always lodge in Kingussie. Am booked to go back in August so I no doubt will be spending quite a bit of time there

Glad you had such a great time Jason - I love Scotland and Speyside in general and the birding up there is fantastic (even if the Crested Tits always hide when I go). Very jealous that you found Ptarmigan on Cairngorm - tried a few years ago in very similar conditions and had a fabulous time but...

Just back from Boldon Flats - water disappearing very quickly but still lots of our feathered friends about - 15-20 Redshank, 7 Wigeon, pair of Blk Tailed Godwit, couple of Heron feeding very well, may have seen the Green Sand piper (but can't be certain so can't count it as a new lifer even...

Cheers - I always seem to go up there in May during the half term hols so I planned a trip for August this year - hopefully will have a little more luck. I am birding and visiting Saltholme a lot more regularly now so I am sure I will catch up with one eventually.
