Waxwings at Jarrow Following Ray Scott's kind tip-off, I found the waxwings this morning. The sun and the light didn't make photography easy! Quite a number of folk were out in Saxon Way, near Bede's World. I didn't think their colour was as bright as usual. Here are some shots I did...

I have four regulars in my garden! I also had fourteen fancy white and speckled pigeons, which I like and so I fed them every morning. One, which I called Charcoal Charlie knew his name and would come onto the kitchen windowsill to be fed. One morning, when I was in my study, there was an...

It's interesting that, whilst buzzards and red kites seem happy to co-exist and even socialise on occasion, both species are targeted by the corvid family!

Red kites over your way? It is pretty wintry in the lower Derwent Valley, but the kites, so far, are okay. They are going into the Gibside Estate to roost from about 3pm onwards. Do visit our website for the latest news, including Golden Glider sitting in a snowy tree...

Buying in bulk Not sure if we are allowed to name firms, so here goes! You can always Google it! I buy from Po****ss, a family firm in Haltwhistle. I buy in bulk and the larger the quantity, the cheaper it becomes. Not only that, I know the quality, e.g. of peanuts will be excellent...

Image editing I use Photoshop a lot - got it as part of the Open University Digital Photography course I did - T189. But I also use Paint.Net which I think is very good, and more rarely IrfanView. The last two are free, so why not download them and have a go! We learn something new...

Ashington today We took a drive from Ponteland to Ashington, where there are still red berries on the trees near the Garage - but no Waxwings!! We went as far as Rennington, then over to Rothbury, but saw absolutely zero Waxies! We live in hope - one year we had a dozen on a Cotoneaster in...

Trow directions Andy, Thanks for this info - safely downloaded for reference. In fact, I think we passed along this section of the coastal road a fortnight ago, without realising that there was so much of interest! We'll try again, when Souter is open perhaps!! June

Pelagic trips I'm soooooo envious of you guys! What a superb two trips you must have had. Are there any more this year, Martin? Having said that, we're doing the Coastal Britain cruise from the Tyne later this year, so maybe I'll be fortunate enough to see some of these wonderful creatures...

Where to go Where is the best place to be in order to see the terns? We need access for a car with a blue badge - my husband can't walk any distance. We had booked to go on the Amble Catamaran today, but they cancelled it, as they had engine trouble and so we'll have to try another time...

Any red kites in your area? You'll understand why I'm asking! We are building a database of territories and nesting for 2010, and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who sees Red Kites in South Tyneside. We have reports from outside the core area of the lower Derwent Valley. Have a...

Bins We bought a whole lot for the Northern Kites Project - they are not bad, and can take a fair amount of use. I bought the scope on one occasion.
