Twite at Seaburn Hi all, I have been watching a pair of Twite feeding by the Lighthouse at Seaburn this afternnon. The birds were feeding in the narrow strip of rough grass on the seaward side of the public footpath and railings between the lighthouse and the old Victorian shelter. I managed...

Pallas Warbler in Roker Park!? BUGGER! I was there only yesterday and didn't have a chance to go today. So, where was the little devil? Anyone know? The forecast for tomorrow morning is awful, but it may hopefully still be around. I have seen a bird in Roker Park a few years ago- around the...

Roker Park Yesterday Afternoon Hi All, Visited Roker Park yesterday- weather was appalling and I didn't see a great deal. There was clearly an increase in the numbers of Blackbirds, however, 40ca. Robins, too, were obvious. Nothing of note despite the encouraging conditions. Hoping to try...

Hi Dougie, Interesting to see that the Pinks I saw were clearly part of a larger movement of birds. Do you mind my asking, were did you see your Snow Bunting? Andy

    ## I disagree, but each to their own, me old fruit. Perhaps we should follow Mark's example and refer to them by their scientific names; Carduelis flammea and C. cabaret it would certainly end the arguments between the "two old guys from the muppets!" :-O Next we would have to decide who was...

    ## Hi Martin, Neither is a Common Yellow-throat common, but it's still a Common Yellow-throat. Nomenclature is Common Redpoll (if you are an internationalist!) and they are circumpolar in their distribution and not just restricted to Scandinavia. Anyway, I found this link on the Shetland...

Redpoll spp I have been reviewing my own books on the ide. of Redpolls and I'm now officially confused. The general size and structure of the bird at St. Mary's on Sunday suggested Common Redpoll, and even made me think of some of the Rostrata birds I have seen on Fair Isle over the last few...

St. Mary's Island Alright, it's not South Tyneside, but I have had a good day nonetheless. A visit north of the river to St. Mary's and saw a confiding Common Redpoll (may have been Rostrata) and an incredibly elusive Pallas's Warbler that I heard far more often than I saw. I did eventually...

Sea-watch Whitburn After having seen the repotrs of this mornings sea-watch I went to the obs. this afternoon from 14:00. The movement of Kittiwakes was amazing- in excess of 1500. Intermingled we quite a few gannets. The main reason for my being there were this mornings reports of Pomarine...

Holy Island yesterday and locally today I spent the entire day on Holy Island yesterday; deliberately stayed on for the later turning of the tide. The numbers of birds were staggering. And I mean absolutely amazing. Brief summary: Blackbird 1000ca Redwing 4000ca (probably a conservative...

WCP First light Went to the coastal park at first light and the bird ringers had already set up. Blackbirds and Song Thrushes were very much evident, today. A nice female Blackbird, and Song Thrush were caught while I was there, both appeared to northern European variants by subtle differences...

I was in the obs when they were passing- quite impressive. Also, a male Snow Bunting along the path directly north of the Observatory. I managed to get close enough to take a photograph with my mobile phone! In addition, 5 Sooty Shearwater, Great Skua, Manx Shearwater and 3 Arctic Skuas.

    ## I have actually seen that happen on the Good Shepard returning from Fair Isle is 1987. Some guy hurled his breakfast over the stern...best views of Bonxie I have ever had while it was eating a half digested piece of toast. Absoluely priceless!!!
