    Devil's Lake, WI

I had a fun hike at Devil's Lake just south of Baraboo. I got lost but once I found a trail I knew, I stumbled upon a Townsend's solitaire. It's the first one I've ever seen in my home state (I've seen them in Colorado) and it let me get a really good view. It made my day.

    Newish to birding

I wouldn't say it's boring as long as you're having fun! Birds can be enjoyed by people of any ability. Besides, watching them out your window can be a whole lot of fun. I have a lot of fun sitting out on my porch and watching them.

    Should I give up birding?

I'm 23 and I'm out looking for birds at least once a week, so you'll meet people of every age. And it's okay to be a beginner. My parents have been teaching me birds since I've been able to walk so I have an advantage, but you can start anytime. There's always something to learn anyway- I don't...

    Good birds seen from restaurants

Not a restaurant, but on a picnic this spring an osprey flew over me carrying its picnic food.

    What am I?

Males: purple finches, in my opinion, look like they have more color on them. The color is a bit different too. House finches are a more orangey red, purple finches are slightly purple. Purple finches also have a darkish patch near their eyes that can stand out. Females: they have a darker...

    House Sparrow? - Alberta, Canada

More specifically, they're common around anywhere people live, just like the other two. You see them a lot in urban areas (there's a lot of very tame ones downtown) and on farms. You'll almost never see them in wilderness areas. I'm guessing it's the same way in Europe because they're called...

What bird is the true sign of spring where you live?

Well I guess it's spring here now.

What bird is the true sign of spring where you live?

Red-winged blackbirds are one of the first smaller birds to show up here, or at least one of the more noticeable ones.

    Another Unknown - Central Illinois

My first thought is American goldfinch too. From what I can see from the wings it looks like they're dark and it's a very faded yellow, but that could just be the lighting.

    For a friend in Tennessee

The tail in some of the pictures looks kind of long to me, but it's hard to tell. It does look pretty light-colored though and the bill does look fairly small in a lot of the pictures so it probably is a mockingbird. Thanks for pointing out the bill length.

    For a friend in Tennessee

As in add-on, the yellow might be due to the lighting. My friend said it was light-colored, possibly gray. It does look like it gets darker near the feet though, which may or may not mean something.

    For a friend in Tennessee

My friend in Clarksville saw this bird in her yard and snapped a few pictures. She took them on her phone, but I tried to find ones that show either more shape or color than the others. I'm thinking it might be a mockingbird or some sort of thrasher but I'm not sure. I put them in an album and...

    Pretty excited to start

Your backyard is a great place to start! That's where my parents taught me all the common birds in our area and it's still where I see a lot of neat birds. Have fun on your journey into the world of birds.

    Great Backyard Bird Count Day!!!

I saw a large flock of cedar waxwings too! I counted 82 in one tree at a park near my house. I also counted 2 American crows, 1 European starling, 5 American robins, 5 house finches, 22 Canada geese, 3 dark-eyed juncos, and 1 black-capped chickadee in the 30 minutes I spent there. I did a count...
