Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

27/05/24 Due to meet a group of German birders in the evening I managed an hour and half’s birding beforehand from tip to Hamitkoy and back. Nothing extraordinary but a good selection of birds in a short time. 2 Eleonora’s Falcons - same area around 3rd bridge. Also reported at Toparlar falls...

State of Hirundine passage this Spring?

This is my 3rd spring living in SW Turkey and I’ve thought numbers of both Swallows are impressive. The flocks over the extensive reedbeds are huge, Red Rumped have made lots of new nests (on new buildings) and there are new House Martin colonies. All (10 +) old Barn Swallow nests at a friends...

18/05/24 Highlights 2 Eleonora’s Falcons (Dark & light). Using a stand of Eucalyptus off the Hamitkoy Road and the area around there. Also 19th and 23rd. Same place- Moustached Warbler, Little Bittern , 3 Cattle Egrets, 1 Marsh Warbler , with 2 Penduline Tits - on the Sedge area opposite melon...

Possible though no white rump visible. We didn’t get our bins on the bird as we were cycling and stopped mid road, when it flew almost behind us. We were both clear on it being large and the bright sunlight and flight angle may have obscured a rump. I’ll return tomorrow , you never know. We had...

Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

12/05/24 An hour and a half of casual birding/biking with Tora Benzeyen. A new area has opened up where access was previously blocked- a promising looking pool at the end of a quiet channel-side path. Squacco Heron on the pool and lots of Warblers in the scrub. 1 Golden Plover - beach, 1...

Despite my late start to spring for unavoidable reasons it’s been a cracker though no rarities involved. Good, sometimes spectacular , numbers of some target species and stunning views. Plus an influx of birders, and more to come it seems The area of the Namnam I re-explored with Dave B. has...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

P Merlin regularly picks out birds I’ve overlooked in a loud chorus of singers, which I confirm by sight . I seem to overlook reasonably distant calling Hoopoe quite often but Merlin records it correctly. At the same time it (or my phone’s manky dust-laden microphone?) doesn’t pick up obvious...

Britain's most prolific egg collector, reoffends again.

Though he could have been one of the few people to taste replica Great Auk omelette .

    Garden / Yard List 2024

A good day for the garden today , a pair of Long tailed Tits - Turkish version. I rarely see them here. Also Masked Shrike and Bee-eaters using the power line in front of my desk window. Long legged Buzzard passed through attended by Hooded Crows. A couple of days ago both Cetti’s Warbler and...

Any local knowledge out there in SW France?

I’d put SW France in the title if I were you. And also there should be a relevant thread for France which would help. Otherwise many will skip over your post without realising where you are. Welcome to BF by the way. 👍🏼

    Garden / Yard List 2024

I struggle to update my own thread so rarely post on this one but have just remembered seeing a Sand Martin yesterday over the property. I was trying to find a singing Golden Oriole at the time but the paleness of the Martin caught my eye. Plenty of them to be found a mile or so away near the...

Yesterday evening whilst sipping on a sundowner on the balcony I was surprised to see a 40 + strong flock of Glossy Ibis towards the lake direction. I thought these had all passed through by now and guess they came down in the usual hidden area of Hamitköy marsh. Also had 3 Night Herons over the...

Good to hear Vinny. With a couple of long days and some luck it’s possible to rack up a very respectable list in this area. Plus the numbers involved and views are often superb. Had a stunning Scops Owl calling quite low down in an orange tree next door near sunset yesterday. Added to a Little...

Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

03/05/24 A late afternoon ride along the Hamitköy road brought plenty of the usual marvels such as Woodchat and Masked Shrike, a stunning male Marsh Harrier hunting a few feet above me and a Pygmy Cormorant surfacing close by on one of the ditches. Highlight though was a Curlew Sandpiper on...

Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

02/05/24 An afternoon with visiting birder Vinny started with a Spur Winged Plover beating its way across the lake against a strong wind. Then a Woodchat Shrike and 2 Rufous Bush Chats on the tip. Purple Heron made an appearance too. Then down to the Namnam , where a Black Stork was pretty much...

What Bird can you hear just now?

The Sparrow chatter (mostly House, some Spanish) has become a constant loud backdrop. Over that is a singing Eastern Olivaceous Warbler a few trees away from a Blackcap

Good to hear. Hopefully be able to catch up with you. I’m curious where you’re staying? There’s not a lot between Hamitkoy and the dump though it’s a plum spot for birding. Had a few birders here recently and I’ve about a week of sightings to catch up on Birdforum. Currently a minimum of 5...

    Holiday turkey october

Hi Glenn, The Fish Owl is difficult at the moment apparently. I have Soner Bekirs contact details if you want a guide- he seems to be the the go-to person for the owl plus he has a huge amount of knowledge about current sites for speciality birds. There is also this thread with lots of useful...

20/04/24 Took a quick trip out between rain squalls and found a crisp male Collared Flycatcher in the mulberry trees and another Great Spotted Cuckoo in the next door grove. Also a surprise Isabelline Wheatear on a small football pitch a few streets away.

Give me a shout if that’s the case and I’ll meet you. There’s still lots moving through. Savi’s might be possible if in usual spot and small numbers of waders seen daily. There’s another birder here on holiday visiting the tip regularly.

What Bird can you hear just now?

Lesser Whitethroat and Blackbird mainly. A heavy storm since at least 5 am has just cleared and the Blackbirds are singing loudly.
