Any point putting out niger seed?

2 goldfinches ate a few seeds from the niger feeder before swapping back to sunflower hearts. Tenner well spent 😂

Any point putting out niger seed?

Sooooo, I purchased a small pre filled yellow niger seed feeder today. I expect it to remain untouched but holding out a very slim hope that the goldfinches will use it and maybe even bring a siskin or two along with them 😂

Any point putting out niger seed?

I've wondered about trying this before, but have the feeling I'd end up with a redundant feeder and more unused niger seed 😂

Any point putting out niger seed?

I've never had any success with niger seed. Goldfinches have always gone for the sunflower hearts, niger always got thrown away untouched after a while.

    Black Oil Sunflower Seed Hulls

Maybe better off buying sunflower hearts rather than seeds, takes away the hull issue.

Have to find a way to keep out squirrels, mice and rats.

Here's the gas cylinder cage I bought for the same issue, but with magpies and feral pigeons rather than squirrels. Gaps are 5cm square, so no problems for tits, finches etc I also bring the feeders inside each night, so any rats or mice that are around don't get a free overnight feast. I no...

    Finches Friend feeders

Not so far. The lantern feeders I dug back out seem to be keeping the seed dry and the weather is slowly starting to change for the better. Keeping the Finches Friend in mind tho, may still end up as a purchase 👍

    Finches Friend feeders

@will562 Don't have squirrels coming to the feeders so the plastic isn't an issue (y) @therobin Thanks for this, might invest in a seed feeder, will send you the bill if the seed gets wet 😂

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Got a 20kg bag of sunflower hearts arriving tomorrow. Another sure sign the birds will vanish for a while !

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

4 bullfinches making frequent visits today, plus the robin and coal tit stopping by to say hello as usual. It's been raining most of the afternoon which has probably deterred most other visitors.

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Really quiet here all week. Robins, coal tit and a few chaffinches making daily appearances, occasional visits from bullfinch and goldfinch thrown into the mix.

Through at the girlfriend's parents yesterday afternoon and they had linnets at the feeders. Not jealous in the slightest....
