Advice for birding outside of Zurich

Apologies for the general Q, but I have just discovered I will need to be in Zurich for meetings on the 29th of May (Friday) and was wondering if I could solicit some advice from a local? I will have a free day (Saturday) with a flight back to Aussie at 10 PM. I was thinking I could either...

    Iora Help

Yes, that was my understanging too, but my local driver/guide stated that for the past 6 months or so he has been seeing Marshall's at this location. I have also been sent a few internet posts about populations of Marshall's now being found in Sri Lanka. I would have thought Common too, but...

    Iora Help

Just back from a fantastic trip to Sri Lanka and I recorded and photographed a bird I believe may be a Marshall's Iora. I understand that this would be a quite a good bird for Ceylon and would love some council. If you have experience, please take a look and give a listen. Cheers, Roger

All, Back to Indonesia in two weeks for work and am planning on driving the first weekend over to Carita from Jakarta stopping at Muara Angke on the way. Then I need to be back in Balikpapan and from there am going to spend a 4 day weekend in Tangkoko. Carita seems pretty straight forward...

    Pink bellied munia - dyed?

While in Jakarta a few weeks ago I had what most certainly was a Javan Munia with a bright pink belly. It was carying nesting material in and out of a palm in front of the Airport Sheraton Hotel. I had heard that in some bird markets they will dye birds, any comments?

    Birding in the Brisbane area

You should! Dom, You would be hard pressed to find a better area to live and Bird. Brisbane has more species diversity than any other AU capital city and my Mrs and I love living here. We live 25 K's west of the CBD and in my opinion that is the only place for a birder to consider. The area...

2 days in Java - Gunung Gede Trip Report

On the front end of a work trip to Indonesia, I arrived in Java (Jakarta) prior to the weekend and drove south a few hours to Gunung Gede Pangrangro National Park near Cibodas. The park is 2 to 7 hours south of Jakarta depending on traffic! This park is well known due to its high concentration...

East Kalimantan - Report w/ Peacock Pheasant - whoo hoo

All, On the back end of a work trip to East Kalimantan I spent two nights at Sungai Wain Protected Forest about 45 minutes from the CBD of Balikpapan. It is important to note that access to the forest has changed, so be aware! Bule (foreigners) are no longer allowed to camp anywhere in the...

    Pelagic photo, help?

A bit more research and I feel comfortable that this is a sub-adult Red-footed Booby. Plumage and color can be variable but the culmen shape is right for Red-footed and the wrong shape for Abbotts. Adult female Abbott's has pink bill so that looks good, but this is a sub-adult, not a full...

    Pelagic photo, help?

I am no expert and would need to check a few refrences but the bird looks like an Abbott's Booby. If so, this would be a significant record for Queensland. Do you have any other photos you might be willing to share? The bird looks oiled which could be why it sat on your boat. Roger

    Day our around Brissie

We had a visiting Birder stay at the Birder's Cottage over the weekend and I took him out on Saturday to see what we could find. He had spent the last few days at Lamington so we avoided Rainforest. We still managed an impressive list of just shy of 150 species. He also managed some good...

    Lamington vs. Mt. Clunie

You all motivated me to head up to Mt Glorious this Saturday to see what I could find. It was a cool and drizzly morning, but Tom Tarrant and I did find a few of the regional goodies. We tried a few new tracks and ended up with a fruiting tree full of Wompoo Pigs and Green Catbirds, later a...

    Lamington vs. Mt. Clunie

Allen, Mt Cootha is the stakeout spot in BNE for Powerful Owl, however one of pair died last year and we have yet to find the roost spot again...assume it will pair back up. It is time to start looking as they should be breeding soon. The other bird that most people go there for is...

    Lamington vs. Mt. Clunie

You can get to Ferny Grove by Train...and to Samford by Bus...but I don't think you can get the extra 7 K's up to Mt Glorious by public transport...Aussie birding areas are not very public transport friendly. There are a few cafe's up on the ridge, but you can grap meals easy in Samford and a...

    Lamington vs. Mt. Clunie

I am speaking about Mt Glorious...I live about 3 K's as the Topknot flies from the park, about 15 minutes by car. There is a Sooty Owl nest hole in the Myala section and and sometimes they will roost at the opening, but I have not seen them there during the day. There are a number of Sooty Owl...
