Greetings to everyone @Birdforum from The Philippines where we have moved following seven years in China. Work and COVID, (remember?!), made life very difficult with an involuntary separation from my family for over two years. DIdn't do much birding. We decided to move to my wife's home town in...

    Nanjing JIangsu China nr river

Are these two Rustic Buntings? They are in the right habitat, riverine scrub; they have crests and striking head patterns ... I see the white lateral crown stripe, white throat etc Seems to match nicely with the description in Brazil's BIrds of East Asia adjusted for winter. Can anyone confirm...

Asian Koel: Botanical Garden, Purple Mountain, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China

I am flummoxed by this bird's ID ... I reckon it is an Asian Koel....a bird I saw often, always in trees, when living in Thailand. Then I realised in general it's calling card was its voice, that loud irritating hoot that keeps you awake at night and wakens you in the morning and of course the...

Asian Brown or Dark-sided Flycatcher, Nanjing, China

The more I look at these pictures the more I think this is Dark-sided especially when reading Mark Brazil's very detailed descriptions of both species. However never really been in a location where anything other than Asian Brown is likely so would welcome the input of a more knowledgeable eye...

Thanks Andrew and mzwebby ...I was a little thrown by the contrast in tarsi and plumage and the books available do not offer much help.

    Silver-throated Tit? (Nanjing, Jiangsu, China)

Are these both Silver-throated tits? Pics 1 and 2 of Bird 1 and Pic 3 of Bird 2. Or am I totally wrong on both counts!? I should add the birds were in the same flock in the same trees in riverside parkland.

Raptor, Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province, PR China, 09.12.17

My initial thoughts were this was probably a Crested Goshawk but when I zoomed in on it I started having doubts. Perhaps it could be a juvenile but that's not a plumage I really know. It was taken at a distance and this has been heavily cropped but there is visible detail so would welcome any...

    Nanjing, Jiangsu, China

Not really sure. It's probably resident and even described by Brazil as 'endemic' to the adjacent province eastwards, Zhejiang. New to area but likely to be here for about 18 months so one to keep look out for. Thanks for heads up.
