    Upgrading 600D to 7D

I'm sure you'll be happy :) But... before you buy the 7D, check out the 70D too... It is closer to the 7D than to the 600D and has better video auto-focus. If you're buying this for birding, then the 7D is definitely the better choice, but since you're probably going to photograph other...

    Upgrading 600D to 7D

Look at it this way: The best pictures you can get out of the 600D are indistinguishable from the best pictures you can get out of the 7D. The difference is that the 7D will get you to the best level much more often. For example, if you're taking a picture of a bird flying, the 600D will take...

Looking for Birding Buddies Dec 12 - Jan 13

Are you leaving Colombia on Jan 4th or 13th? If it's the 2nd then I hope to be in Bogota on business. I doubt I'll get much birding done (fingers crossed for the weekends!), but it would be great to meet up. Robert

Have 7d, but so confused over lens...help?

You actually have a few more options than the 100-400. To my mind there are 5 options: Sigma 120-400 Sigma 150-500 Sigma 50-500 Canon 100-400 Canon 400 The last lens is perhaps the best if ALL you're doing is birding. The others are much more versatile. The other lenses range from Very Good to...

    Canon 400mm/f5.6 vs Sigma 150-500mm/f5.6-6.3

If it's only for birding then the 400mm is the better lens, but if you want to do more with the lens - sports, larger animals, zoo animals... then the Sigma might be a better fit due to the zoom.

    Hostels in the Hula region

Hmmm... looks like gogalil doesn't have prices and stuff. I found the website for the last time I was there. I stayed at Kibbutz Gadot. http://www.gadot-lodging.co.il/zimmer_gadot_e.asp It's basic, but good.

    Hostels in the Hula region

That area has tons of B&Bs, just about every spot on the map has lodging of some sort. gogalil.org has an English site with lodging information.

    Israel in July

Hi, Here's a link that might be helpful: http://birds.org.il/14-en/Birding-Israel.aspx I'd say that the two best "hot-spots" would be the Eilat birding center (just outside the city limits) in the south and the Hula Valley in the north. There are also quite a few guides who would be happy to...

    The Sigma 150-500 Dillema

There's a rumour about a new 100-400 too... http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/11/canon-ef-100-400-f4-5-6l-is-soonish-cr2/ But since I'd have to sell an arm to get either the new 100-400 or the 200-400, the existing 100-400 is the only one I'd be able to hand-hold :)

    Lisbon

Hi, I'm going to be in Lisbon in mid-december and I might have a free day-and-a-half. I'll probably use a day to do the touristy stuff and I'd hoped to have the half day for birding. Are there any suggestions for something close to / within Lisbon? Thanks, Robert

    The Sigma 150-500 Dillema

I think you mean: 150-500 : high quality image, very reliable + money for other things 100-400 : higher quality image, very reliable The 100-400 is the ONLY 400 zoom that Canon makes, so it's the worst as well as the best ;)

    600D + EF100-400 or something else?

My 2 cents: The 600D is a great camera for birding. From a lens point of view you need to get to 400mm at least. These are the "budget" options I'm aware of: 1. Canon 400mm - probably best quality but this is a dedicated-to-birding lens; You can't even go to the zoo with it. 2. Sigma...

    The Sigma 150-500 Dillema

I don't know... the Bigmos is about 60% of the price of the Canon 100-400. A quick check on Adorama gives a nearly 700$ difference. I can do a lot of nice things with 700$. Look, I'm not saying that the Bigmos is better than the Canon. All I'm saying that I'm buying the lens as a means to an...

    The Sigma 150-500 Dillema

Not sure if you wanted to include a smiley at the end of your message, but let me ask a question: Where do you think you'll get nicer pictures - buying the expensive lens or buying the less expensive one AND going on an exotic holiday?

    The Sigma 150-500 Dillema

I disagree about being disappointed with the Sigma. The important thing to remember is that the Sigma is an excellent lens. The 100-400 may be even better but that does not make the Sigma worse. You're not choosing between good and bad lenses. You're choosing between great and greater lenses...

New to birdwatching - need a better lens!

I think the thing to remember is that we're not comparing between good and bad lenses. We're comparing between great and greater lenses! Each lens has it's advantages and disadvantages, but in this area of lenses (cheaper modern super-teles) they are all excellent. I bought the Sigma 150-500...

    Canon 100-400mm v Sigma 150-500mm

I've only got the 150-500 and I'm really happy with it. After my pre-buying research I came to the conclusion that the Canon is slightly better while the Sigma has a better cost/performance ratio. It's a best of both worlds I think - if you want to spend the extra money on the Canon, great. If...

    Canon Rebel XT

I use the 350D/XT and a Sigma 150-500 lens. The 350D is a great little camera and you can get excellent pictures with it. I don't think upgrading the camera is the best way to get good pictures, you'll still be much more limited by the lens. Start off by saving up for a better lens (the...
