Sea Eagle spotting tips?

Hi all Keep noticing sightings of sea eagles Poole and Christchurch harbours on Dorset Birds. Anyone got any tips on maximising chance of seeing one? Where to go, what time? Anything really. Apologies if Ive missed a thread on this already. Thanks!

Hi I still come in and read new posts but I'm not an active "birder" anymore really. Still take an interest though and any really local interest I might follow up on.

Saw a grey wagtail strutting around on my lawn in suburban Northbourne friday morning. Most surprised. Maybe he was drawn in from somewhere by my pond. Very quiet in here of late, PooleParrot still around I wonder?

No one mentioning the red footed falcon at Wareham? Most odd. I went over yesterday to do an extended walls walk and thought I might see it. But Im beginning to think it is/was near the A351 bridge over the Frome not the Piddle. Anyone?

Must admit, even though I have been "birding" for about 7 years round the area Im not really sure where it is either. A quick google shows it is somewhere sort of between of St Catherines Hill and the Avon but not sure how you'd get there, parking etc, or if you're allowed to walk out onto it or...

Everyone else more knowledgeable than me but Portland yes, also Radipole(chance of bearded tit, marsh harrier) and Lodmoor lakes not far from there. Have fun.

Was fishing near Hurn airport yesterday, didnt have binoculars, saw a buzzard soaring and later fairly sure a red kite was over. Long wingspan compared to buzzard and a fairly deep V on the tail. Im not going to tick it for the year but pretty certain. Do sparrowhawks soar? Saw some hawks...

Hi Woody Surprised you didnt see shag, fulmar and razorbill at Durlston. Have you visited Arne? Maybe an idea for one of your days? Swineham near Wareham? Is a circular walk around large gravel pit/lakes taking you along the Frome for some of it. Chance of water rail there in the reeds...

Hurn Forest last night on my annual nightjar run. A couple of LBJ's flew up off the track as I was wandering in, settled on some gravel outcrop/ridges. Bins up, woodlark. Not seen them here before so that was a good start. About 9.00pm ish heard and spotted a woodcock roding. Close enough...

Popped over to Morden midday yesterday in the hope of a glimpse of the STE. No luck unfortunately. Thumbs up though to the farmer who opened his gates to allow parking and for whoever organised for it to be done so quickly. I was also impressed with how all the "twitchers" I saw there...

That's great, thanks James, PooleParrot and woody! [EDIT] Nipped out late afternoon Sunday, tide was way out but did start to come in later. No sign of scoter but saw 3 spoonbills feeding, 2 sandwich terns, brent geese, 50+ shelduck and 7 or 8 R.B. Mergansers. Cheers all.

Morning all Could anyone advise the best place to go and look for the surf scoter? Is it in bramblebush bay? Also wonder if its possible to foot passenger over on the ferry and walk to see it or is it too far up? Id also be grateful if anyone knows where might be best to see a lesser spottoed...

They are 'par' for the course round here. <groan> Sounds like a good day out to me. Ive still yet to see a scoter of any sort.

Ok, good luck with it. Half the battle with bird is getting near enough using fieldcraft/hides etc. Im sure with practice you'll get some good ones. As Joe has kind of said, when you're at the long end you're going to be wanting 1/500 or faster shutter speeds at all times ideally. The IS...

Greetings all. Sorry for the irruption of a southerner into your thread. I wonder could I humbly ask if any of you kind birding ladies and gentlemen could tell me the best time of year to go and look for golden oriole at Lakenheath reserve? Im pondering a short trip in spring and hope to...

Sorry to hear you're not getting good results with the 400. If you do think of selling I wouldnt mind knowing about it! Hopefully Im not breaking any forum rules by saying such. Ive got a 450D, longest zoom I have is 300, a bit limited really. Cheers

Dropped into Middlebere hide Sunday afternoon about 3 on the off chance of a hen harrier. No luck but did see a yellow-legged gull perched out in the channel. Hands up if you were one of the 3 green clad photographers in the hide then.

    where to try/buy scopes?

hi all since NR Green in Parkstone closed I dont know where there is to go and try scopes in Dorset(or West Hampshire). Does anyone know where I might be able to go to try out Swarovskis, Kowas, Pentax etc side by side? I quite fancy an ATX 85HD but really ought to try it first! And I might...

No way of knowing if its genuine or not is there. I would have thought a wild one would not allow such close approach as I got that day though. It was near Throop in Bournemouth. Also saw an egyptian goose in fields near the Stour on the same day as the duck seen. (4 May) Meant to say in...

Thanks for the kind words all. I should point out it wasnt my "find", a friendly warden on Brownsea Island told me where to look. (Even then I still had difficulty finding it though!) Sorry for late response, been off all week and internet been low on my list of things!

Thanks Ian, didn't see any rings no, duck stayed in the water. I thought it was a Ferruginous but reluctant to tick it because of its odd location and behaviour.
