    Pels Fishing Owl

We tried to get a decent photo of a Pels Fishing Owl at Drotskys in Botswana, but it was a bit far away. Can anyone recommend an area in South Africa where one has a chance of spotting these beautiful birds? Perhaps we will be luckier next time!

    Herero Chat

Steve, We also saw them at Spitzkoppe. We hiked around Small Bushman's Paradise and found about six pairs on the rocks and in the trees there. Not sure where else you could find them. Sorry.

Keith, this bird is a Yellow-bellied Greenbul. It is a wild bird which was why we found it so surprising that it was trusting enough to eat out of our hands.

    General observations and bird reports.

It's amazing how quickly they adapt to their new circumstances, Pam. We saw a one-legged guinea fowl that was just as agile on his single pin as the two-legged ones. I hope she survives. Jane

    Sani Pass

Hi there, I used to run a Bed & Breakfast in Himeville (Sani Manor) and we booked tours up Sani Pass with all the major tour companies. We found that you could do a booking early in the morning on the day you wanted to go up, or the evening before, so don't book too far in advance. Generally...

    Trip to Caprivi

I would really recommend visiting the Chobe Game Reserve in Botswana - easily accessible from the Caprivi. The birding is excellent and if you take a boat trip you will be well-rewarded with both birds and animals.

    Cheetahs in Namibia

Hi Steve, You are absolutely right - you do need a 4x4 in the Central Kalahari. The Kgaligadi is fine for two wheel drive but the roads are absolutely shocking. Very corrugated. Depends really when you go - at the height of season the roads worsen because of all the traffic. Loads of...

    Cheetahs in Namibia

Hi Steve We spent two weeks in the Central Kalahari this year in April, and at Deception Valley we saw no less than 8 cheetahs in one day. We also saw two others at Passarge Valley. We considered ourselves really lucky. Have been to every spot possible in Namibia and the only ones we have...

Hi Sal, Thanks for your welcome. When we are not living in Namibia we live quite near you in Underberg. Beautiful spot. Will be returning there in about 2011. Jane
