  1. Cardamom Pod

    Sparrow Michigan USA

I took this in June and just now realized that I don't know what kind of sparrow it is. It's from the Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Thanks!

I apologize-this looks a lot better on my computer.

    Eastern Bluebird

This bluebird was very cooperative, landing in the parking lot of Powder Valley and then flying up to eye-level perches. I'm looking forward to getting out for some bird photography this weekend, though it might be rainy.

    The 70-200 L vs 100-400 vs 300 f4 L vs 400mm 5.6

I would go with either of the two you eliminated;) I use the 400 f5.6 with the 450D/XSi, and I'm very happy with that combination, and looking around on flickr and in the gallery the 100-400 has always struck me as better than the 300+1.4x.

    Potential Upgrade

I use the 450D and 400mm f5.6l, and I think it's a great combination. If I had the money I would upgrade to a 7D but the lens is great and I think the body is above average too.
  6. Same Robin, Same Snake

    Same Robin, Same Snake

In this picture he's got more of the snake showing. I think it is a Brown Snake, which would be about right for the size and coloration.
  7. Swamp Sparrow

    Swamp Sparrow

I only got one shot of this guy, but I was pretty happy with it.
  8. Robin with Snake

    Robin with Snake

I was amazed to see this robin eating a snake yesterday. I found it with half the snake already gone, and it slowly finished the rest of it.

    FZ28 versus a DSLR Setup ?

I'll probably get in trouble for saying this, and it may be wrong, but pick a focal length- eg. 400mm, and divide it by 17 to get a rough equivalent of the zoom. My 400mm f5.6 is, I think, equivalent to a 24x zoom on a superzoom camera.

    FZ28 versus a DSLR Setup ?

I think it really depends on what you're looking to do-if you want decent record shots, you should stick with the superzoom, but if you want really nice images and want to put some time into getting them, you should get a dslr. I guess one thing to consider is how much you wish to spend, because...

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

I don't know what it is, but the colors just look richer than any of my shots. Anyway, I know most people are comfortable at iso 1600 on the 7d, so if that's the same on the 550d, I'm running out of reasons to not get it!

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

Wow...do you know the iso setting? That's a really nice picture.

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

thanks. That's what I wanted to hear. Now the 550D is looking pretty hard to resist.

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

micloi- I've been looking around at the 550D, and I'm pretty impressed. My question for you as an owner of the 60d and 7d would be how the 550d compares in terms of high iso? Although I'd like more fps and a larger body, those are secondary to high iso perfomance, and a grip as you suggested...

Hides/Blinds... how close do birds get?

I have an Ameristep Doghouse Blind, and a 400mm f5.6, and only rarely do birds get too close for me to focus. With a little thought about where I want to set up, it almost never happens.

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

Well, it looks like I may keep my 450d unless I can find a $500 7D:-O Maybe I'll get a battery grip or teleconverter to satisfy my gear acquisition needs, though.

    Hawk IDs Ohio March 2011

3 and 4 look good for red-tail to me.

    Upgrade from 450D to 40d

I agree I'm more tempted by the 40d. For one thing, it seems, from pictures I've seen, that iso 800 is pretty useable.

Zone8848-I was in my blind, so he was about 15ft. away. I agree, cardinals are some of the more skittish birds in my backyard.

    Female Cardinal

I'd set up this branch hoping to use the yellow forsythia bush as a background, but the weight of the snow moved it down and a lot of the bush was also covered in snow. Still, some of the background matches her color.

    Cardinal

It's hard to believe that it's the end of March with so much snow around.
  24. Song Sparrow

    Song Sparrow

Although I wasn't really happy to see the snow, I got some nice pictures because the birds were eager to use the feeders.
