    Stop-over in Singapore in July

If you are close to the airport take the bum boat over to Pulau Ubin and hire a bicycle or just have a walk around. Buy a guide book for SE Asia before you go and just enjoy the birds you see.

    Crete in Spring

Unless your heart is set on Crete you should consider Cyprus if you really want Ruppell’s Warbler. I was in the Pathos area this year in the last week of March and there was loads of them along with plenty of other great birds.

    King Eider

I didn’t realise you meant a specific bird. I thought you meant general info on the species. Whoops.

    King Eider

It’s not a bird regularly found in Wales. A few turn up in Scotland each year amongst the Common Eider flocks I think, so your best bet would be to look out for the various rare bird reports found on the net. I imagine the Welsh birders on this forum would be a lot better informed on the...

24 hrs in Singapore this weekend - where to go?

I had Crimson Sunbird on Pulau Ubin.

    ID challenge Costa Rica

It’s a separate photo. I know it’s a rubbish pic but the number of species in the photo I thought would make for an interesting ID challenge. Thanks for your help. That was my first trip to Central America so a lot of the smaller stuff has been a bit of a headache to say the least and a few...

    ID challenge Costa Rica

The two large birds on the left were Tropical Kingbirds if I remember correctly. The Euphonia is Scrub Euphonia, and theres a Streak backed Oriole on the left. Its the birds on the right of the pic I'm struggling with.

    ID challenge Costa Rica

It is a poor photo I know. The light was poor, there was no background, and the birds were at a fair distance. All part of the challenge but good answers though.

    Hummers Monteverde CR

Think I've got most of these but still need some help and/or confirmation; 1. Coppery-headed Emerald? 2 & 3. Green Violetear? 4. Not sure. 5. Green-crowned Brilliant?

    ID challenge Costa Rica

This pic was took at Playa Conchal Guanacaste a few days ago. There are 5 possibly 6 species in this shot. Can you name them all? (I certainly can't!).

    Songbird Guanacaste Costa Rica

    Possibly a female Scarlet Tanager?

    Songbirds Guanacaste Costa Rica

Numbers 1 & 3 are Flycatchers I think. Possibly the same species but which one I've no idea. Number 2 I also haven't got a clue. The bird appeared to have a very short tail although it might just have been the angle it was perched. Number 4 is possibly a Summer Tanager inbetween plummages. This...

24 hrs in Singapore this weekend - where to go?

If your on a stopover at the airport you’ll waste time getting to the big parks and if it’s in the middle of the day they will be busy and the birding will be slow. Stay in the Changi area. Check out the small forest and golf course round the back of the Changi Village Hotel. You’ve a good...

    From my Manhattan Window

Just a quick note to say that this is a fantastic thread. I'm sure that this has already been noted earlier in the thread but I think its a real delight and charm that you use those prints from an old guide to illustrate the sightings that you've had. I've always considered returning to New...

    Birding tours companies

You could try Oriole Birding. They fly from the UK but they might do a land only package if you contact them. Then you could fly down from Canada. They have excellent reports of their trips on their website.

    Costa Rica on a budget

I'll definately be visiting Panama one year either independently or on a bird tour. Regards Costa Rica I've gone for the lazy option and booked a package deal in Guanacaste. I just couldn't face car hire, a three or four hour bus journey or an expensive cab ride. The hotel is surrounded by...

    Costa Rica on a budget

Thanks for your replies. Some good suggestions. Would it be easier to hire a car at the airport? Do independent birders get around by driving in Costa Rica?

    Costa Rica on a budget

Hello all. I’m just looking for some advice on a possible future trip to Costa Rica. I don’t want to cover various places I just want to find a lodge that I can stay at for around a week or so. I’m not bothered about building up a huge trip list. I would just go birding around the lodge or...

Thanks I will check that out.

    Texas Rio Grande November

Thinking of planning a trip to south east Texas this November for a weeks birding. Can anyone recommend a hotel to stay at in the McAllen or Harlingen area that I can base myself at and is therefore easy to reach the birding sites from? Perhaps there is another town that would be a better base?

    Florida hotel for birdwatching?

Thanks for that. Am considering San Francisco too. Problem for me with Uber or doober or scooby doober, or any of these non tax paying Apps that use slave labour and kill the market for established tax paying individuals, is that I am a London black cab driver. Obviously you were not to know...
