    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Finally! Would have been surprised if it didn't turn up! It's been clear for"ages" that they're not related at all.

    Anatidae

Completely agree! Older than Polysticta, Mergellus and Lophodytes. Oidemia are really different as well. Also interesting to note the relatively old age of splits within Common Merganser assemblage (Common, Scaly-bellied, Auckland and Brazilian), at least compared to the very young divergences...

    Western Black-eared Wheatear ?

Antalya is in Turkey, which makes this default Eastern Black-eared.

    Accipitridae

    Me too me please! :)

    Gruiformes and Charadriiformes

Interesting! Haven’t read what they base their phylogeny on, but a couple of notes from looking at the tree in the supplementary document: Pluvialis plovers sister to ibisbill, stilts, avocets and oystercatchers Yet another study revealing how young the above clade minus Pluvialis is. Time to...

    Picidae

Interesting! But isn't the point that they don't have a common ancestry? Yes, they're all woodpeckers, but Lesser Spotted is only a distant relative to White-backed, Middle Spotted to Great Spotted, Downy to Hairy and so on.

    Certhioidea

    Yup, firmly part of Cantorchilus.

    Gruiformes and Charadriiformes

Errors happen of course, but this is weird. IOC apparently joined in as well when rearranging Rallidae, putting castaneiceps and viridis in Rufirallus, fasciatus still left in Laterallus though. Is this just a lapse or is there a better reason for this?

    Robins are flycatchers?

Just looking at the tree adjoining the abstract, no changes vs IOC since Timor Blue has already been moved to Eumyias.

    Ardeidae

    Thanks for your quick reply!

    Ardeidae

If Bubulcus were to be merged into Ardea, would the gender be changed for coromandus to coromanda?

    HBW-BirdLife Version 8.0 (December 2023)

’Tis the season to dechiffre whatever changes BLI has made. Why the heap of sheets, but nowhere an easy-to-read list of what’s new?

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Is there any way to make linear rearrangements visible before the release of the final version?

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Nov 17 Revise linear sequence of genera and species within Glareolidae. The linear sequence of genera and species within Glareolidae is revised to better align with the phylogeny in Černý and Natale (2022). Nov 18 Revise linear sequence of genera and species in Ardeidae. Revise linear sequence...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Agree with you. I guess if there was a split or lump involved, IOC would have mentioned it though.

    Columbiformes

Only lividor. Dakhlae considered invalid due to domestic origin.

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

    Very well put, agree fully!

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

Come on guys, this is not X/Twitter, could we please stop calling people we disagree with names? We're better than that.

    Robins are flycatchers?

    No one? Laurent?
  21. G

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

True that it’s a misnomer, but at least it refers to the bird’s appearance in some way. You too!
  22. G

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

How about Rufous? One’s black, one greyish-green, and one rufous.
  23. G

    Clements 2023 Checklist Update

Totally agree, wonderful name! In Swedish we’ve reserved that for Indian Pond though, sadly.
  24. G

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

Does it? At least it gives some sort of information on the bird itself, i.e. that it breeds on that island. That's far more than its existing name does.
