    High Island in late March?

High Island is always a crap shoot. There are lots of other places to check out in the area, Anahuac, Bolivar flats, Rollover Pass, Lafitte's Cove and Galveston Island SP, so I'd say go for it.

    Ring Necked Dove?

Eurasian Collared Doves are spreading across the U.S., but their black neck ring doesn't go all around their necks. They're big, pale doves that favor supermarket parking lots here in the south.

    Housotn, TX: a mysterious Vireo?

Acadian Flycatcher is the most likely Empid and Red-eyed or Yellow-throated the likely Vireos in June in Houston, according to my checklist.

    Hawk ID?

Was that at Lafitte's Cove? You see the most surprising things there, it's always worth a visit.

What is this bird please? Central Minnesota - May 2013

I think the seam in the wood of the deck is making the bill look much bigger than it is, hence the grosbeak mistake (i thought it was a grosbeak looking at the thumbnail).

Strange yellow bird in central Texas - need help

A female Oriole would be my guess. There are lots of Orchard Orioles around.

Advice for birding in Portland city and surroundings

Here is an ebird bar chart for the county (Multnomah) that Portland is in. This should give you a good idea of what to expect.

    Warbler ID Central Texas

It is the Oporornis that would farthest out of range. The white throat is what makes me think MacGillivray's. The eye ring . . .

    Warbler ID Central Texas

    It's really a tough one!

    Warbler ID Central Texas

I've seen MacGillivray's at Freeport before, and that's my guess.

Vaux's swift? Playa Del Rey, CA US

Indeed, there is not, I was adding it in my mind! I first saw Vaux's swift in Portland, Oregon, many years ago, in a spectacular evening flight of thousands into an elementary school's incinerator's chimney. People from all over town gathered to see it.

Vaux's swift? Playa Del Rey, CA US

Oh that's very fun. It doesn't explain my failure to notice the lack of an "L" in Abert's Towhee though.

Bald eagles in USA during early June?

Bald Eagles are common year round in Colorado. Look at eBird > Explore Data > Bar Charts, select the counties or parks you will visit, then > map for specific locations. eBird is a fantastic planning tool once you figure out how it works. San Francisco doesn't look too promising for Bald Eagles.

    Ladder-Backed? SW Utah, USA

    Yes, Ladder-backed.

    Arizona Hawk

Looks like a Zone-Tail to me. I don't think Black Hawks stray very far from water.

Are blackbirds in Denver all summer?

    Ebird says this.

Couple of hours birding in Houston?

It is an odd little park made from the flood prone land at the back of a subdivision off FM 1960. It has lovely huge oaks and other bottomland trees. There are a couple of nice ponds, one surrounded by cypress trees. I visited it about a month ago and it was suffering from the drought but it...

Couple of hours birding in Houston?

Transportation will be your challenge. There is only one bus (the 102) that goes to the airport. It is a local that makes a very long trip to downtown. You could take a cab to Jesse H. Jones County Park or to Mercer Arboretum. They are both nice and close. If you are willing to rent a car, you...

Birding the Hill Country and San Antonio

Oh, that might be tricky. July will be hot and we are in the middle of a prolonged drought. I've seen both of your birds on the East Trail (in the high part, I'm afraid, after the steep, short climb) but it was in spring. It is pretty much a hiking only park, though the ponds on the East Trail...

Upcoming TX Trip - Ferruginous Pygmy Owls?

You can try a (paid) tour of the King Ranch. Apparently the owl is a bit difficult to schedule, but the tours aren't terribly pricey ($15). There was talk about it not long ago on Texbirds.

    Dallas - 16 hawks?

I would guess that these were TVs headed toward their usual evening communal roost. You might be able to see this any winter evening. But, yes, hawks in migration do fly in large groups.

    Hornsby Bend (Austin) question

It's a good question. A giant Fish and Wildlife pickup truck (which was going the wrong way) put itself in the drink going around my tiny Honda at Atwater's Prairie Chicken NWR once. He was able to get himself out though he was very muddy.

    Edward's Plateau birds

You see Bank Swallows at the coast the last two weeks of April / first week of May. By the ton, but then they're gone. Dickcissels start in early April and go all summer. But grassy fields don't tend to be state parks, do they. It is the sort of bird I see by accident, not when I'm looking for it.
