    Bournemouth Pier

Hello You really need strong southerly winds to get anything of interest in the bay. Hengistbury head and Christchurch harbour are more likely to be of interest. Cheers

    Evaluative metering vs. Spot metering

The spot is pretty big so the bird would have to fill a lot of the center metering point for it to work. Its not going to work at all with dark birds on a distant tree against a light sky. When all is said and done you may as well learn how to go manual as it is just easier IMO. PS I think most...

    Fungi ID requests please

The first (and possibly the second) is a Parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) - much sought after by the local Chinese restaurant. In fact so sought after that sometimes all you see is a field of parasol mushroom stems, the caps having being whisked away.

    Digiscope versus DSLR

Hello Curt Superbridge cameras are pretty good these days and are comparable to a budget DSLR set up. If you require more reach to photograph fairly static subjects then digiscoping is better. If you require more speed to photograph close fast moving subjects then DSLR and a 300-400mm lens is...

DSLR settings for birds in flight against different backgrounds

Using aperture priority you let the camera control the exposure (shutter speed) and as the OP has found the camera will get it wrong when the subject moves from a light to dark background etc. With manual mode you control both the exposure (shutter speed) and F stop. As long as you have set the...

    Birding around Poole

Hello Delia As a resident Poole harbour birder I would suggest Brownsea and Arne as the obvious places to visit. Lodmoor in Weymouth is worth a trip, however Portland is home to the Olympic sailing so is going to be very busy. Wareham forest is worth a visit for Hobbys. With luck there might...

    Custom shooting modes

I agree with Roy on this, as soon as you get your camera out switch to manual and set up for the current conditions, use these and adjust on the fly as the lighting/subject colour changes. If you are caught short then just switch to AV and adjust the iso, with a bit of luck the camera will get...

    2012 UK Orchid season updates

Burnt tip orchids Two specimens found at Martin down (Hants). Three Greenwinged orchids at a nearby Dorset site. Of note the Corfe Mullen meadow appeared to be devoid of Green wings when normally there are hundreds !. A consequence of the dry March weather perhaps.

    Canon 30D quandary

Low light performance and decent reach equals expensive if your going the DSLR route. I would only consider F4 lenses useful for low light work and 400mm the minimum for reach. The DSLR body is less crucial and a 30D would be fine. Realistically a superzoom would best fit your budget you just...

    Canon Primes

Not easy but sort of easy Are you happy to carry a tripod around: yes - get the 500mm F4 no - get the 300mm F2.8 and converters (I'm in the "no" camp and use the 300) ------------------ http://wessex.wordpress.com/

300mm f2.8 IS - Which strap and fixing points

Hello Alex I always use the two lugs on the lens as the attachment points, attaching to the camera would be iffy as the weight of the lens could damge your mounting ring. Its really whatever suits your style and way of handling the camera. Aidan

    Teleconverter advice please.

Hi Simon Even a 1.4 TC is iffy in poor light i.e. winter. Useable in the summer, tripod recommended unless you are particularly adept at manual focusing. Still a 1.4 TC is useful for when you do get your 600mm. Aidan.

FZ28 to DSLR ...The saga continues ...

Hello Dave Be aware you need to get close for good photos with a DSLR + 400mm combo compared with your superzoom (bridge) camera. Most people when switching from a superzoom are surprised how little reach 400mm will get you on a DSLR. Next time you are out with your superzoom see how close you...

    Canon 300 F2.8L vs Sigma 500 f4.5 EX?

Hi HokkaidoStu Not used both lenses but have just switched from the 100-400 to the 300F2.8 Mk1. Pros - slightly sharper takes 2x TC OK giving 600mm, a nice increase over the 100-400. in poor light can still take photos at F4 or F2.8 (a real plus in the dull UK winter) stacked TCs (1.4x+2x)...

Canon 100-400 IS lens Arrived !

Hello Simon Top tip: Great images from Canon lens = get very close to subject. No seriously, a digiscoping setup has an equivalant focal length of 1000-3000mm compared to your 100-400mm. The DSLR image quality is much better and I suppose you can crop more than on a compact camera and...
