Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

The most recent comprehensive studies, or at least the studies using birds, mammals, and frogs, generally place South Florida firmly in the Nearctic. I think the earlier referral might be heavily based on plant diversity, rather than vertebrate diversity

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Returning to the topic at hand: AOS has put out a general poll, open to everyone, even non-AOS members, asking for general comments on the process. Note they are not asking for specific comments on names for each of the 6 "pilot" species, but rather broader things. So if folks want to make...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I am not sure its as obvious as Wallacea, as the island nature of that transition I think makes things a lot more straightforward. Mexico is pretty much the transitional "region", with the Neotropics extending north into the country roughly along the Gulf, while the deserts and mountains of the...

    Trochilidae

Apparently, most of the type series for Peruviana came out as the Southern form when genetically tested, but it sort of seems like a mess that maybe the ICZN might have to weigh in on? Until the nomenclature is better sorted out I don't see SACC splitting it. I am just thankful my Giant...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

(Most) people are not going back to scientific names. What people will do is that some will use the new names, and some will use the old names. Which honestly happens all the time, even for name changes that are not controversial. I still refer to things like Gray Jays all the time for instance...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

the big thing is the grave-robbing of Native American graves, which were used in Phrenology (sp?) studies

Kind of sounds like there will be no shortage of folks that agree with rahopko present!

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

An update straight from the AOS, which specifically brings up the petition and some of the related fallout. So it does seem like the AOS is taking the petition and related criticisms seriously, and not just dismissing it out of hand (which, not going to lie, I was kind of expecting)...

    Your most anticipated futures books

Both of those weasels are incredibly rare, and may very well not have good publication quality photos in existence I mean I doubt the book would want to include this: https://gizmodo.com/man-takes-first-ever-photo-of-living-colombian-weasel-a-1835102519

Best bird guides by region...North America

I don't think it's possible to directly link a specific facebook post (and I don't know if it would be viewable anyway unless you were friends with him). He's on facebook. It's not rocket science to find him if you want the original post.

Best bird guides by region...North America

Ian Paulsen (who often has the inside track on field guides) posted the following information on his facebook page which should be of interest: "Penguin/Random House has announced the publication date for the newly revised Nat Geo East/West Bird Guides: 4 February 2025. The 8th edition of the...

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

I will have to check that. As someone who has never seen that species nor is likely to see it in the nearish future, I didn't pay much attention to it.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

I want to say out near Hawaii they have found some mixed in with the Tropical Pacific form (which should probably eventually be split from the Atlantic form eventually).

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

That's never been a serious contender. IIRC the NACC is going for Cocos Booby, which complements the existing Nazca Booby; both are named after the geologic plates that correspond to their range. I never brought it up when I first posted that proposal, but there is some salt to put it lightly...

Brown Booby may get split - an issue for British listers?

I don't know why folks wouldn't treat these records as the Atlantic form. The Cocos/Brewster's form would be an order of magnitude rarer. Certainly the burden of proof is on the folks who think could be the Cocos/Brewster's form, to demonstrate it is that. Certainly the default mentality for...

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

IIRC each island has there own endemic resident subspecies, which are also future splits. The challenge IIRC is that some mainland birds do sometimes pop up in the West Indies, although I assume they must be identifiable for this to be known. At any rate, I wouldn't expect the Caribbean form to...

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

The second one is definitely an Atlantic, not a Cocos/Brewster's. Juvenile Booby id is far out of my area of expertise and I am at work without the resources to check

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

I believe ID is straight forward, and the newly split booby doesn't occur in the Atlantic. The proposal mentions that range expansion in the Pacific has occurred, with both Brown and "Brewster's" being found in the same colonies to a limited extent, and one of the arguments is that when mixed...

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

The most likely version of the proposal to pass would have Northern range through most of Mexico, with the Yucatan and further south Southern. Any House Wren you saw in Florida would be Northern, if that is what you are wondering.

    Costa Rican Taxonomy

A phylogeny is nowadays kind of a key part of any paper that describes a new species, because you want to put it in the context of what its related to, and the genetics can provide a line of evidence to support species recognition.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Clements I believe is the hold out on that split, so they sort of have to address what with the checklist reconciliation process going on. Southern and Northern House Wren split should get a ton of birders an armchair tick...both are widespread and pretty easy to see.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Wow...good timing. After discussion of how this forum is dead, NACC just posted there next batch of proposals, with some pretty interesting changes https://americanornithology.org/about/committees/nacc/current-prior-proposals/2024-proposals/

    Anatidae

It's always good to be cautious about trees and dating that rely solely on mitochondrial DNA, especially for groups that are not the focus of the paper (e.g. anything that is not a Merganser).
