    Hunting Hobby.

JGYR ... At Middleton Lakes recently and Sudbury Hall Lake (just over the Staffs border in Derbyshire) this week, I've again had good views of Hobby doing what they do so impressively ... catching and eating dragonflies, and making it look so easy. Hope this helps..

PS: I meant to mention a small lizard (or lizard look-alike ) near the metal gate scuttling across the path from that small pool ... saving the life a frog about to be run over near the Errwood car park ! ... and seeing two stoats (each crossing the road on separate sides of Buxton). AR

    goyt valley nr buxton

Hi All First ever time birding in the valley yesterday ... Very enjoyable, but helped of course by the weather and by connecting with several of my favourite species... Redstart, Dipper, Tree Pipit, Red Grouse, Curlew and Wheatear ... but no sign of any Pied Flycatcher. My wanderings started...

Ideas on places to visit near Lichfield

Hi BB Only just seen your post, but if it's not too late, you would find it very useful to keep looking at two key blogs/websites .... StaffsBirdNews and Tame Valley Birding, both of which are included in an all encompassing Midlands birding link birdingtoday.co.uk , which is where I would...

    Short-eared Owl in Coleshill

Hi Rob Not sure which side of Brum you would be coming from ... but an easy way to reach the site is to leave J9 of the M42 heading down the A446 towards Coleshill. After less than 5 minutes you will have gone over a roundabout, the River Tame and TWO railway lines. As soon as you see some...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Willington Gravel Pits Hi All My first visit to WGP for some time, and although the 3 Bearded Tit had moved on by 10am this morning, the Bittern showed well at various times this afternoon, giving very decent views from Platform 4 to several observers during the two hours I was there. In...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Nice set of photos there Neil ... and what a confiding, showy bird it was today, when it came down on to that bank in front of so many birders and photographers. Andy R.

    Interesting warbler

Hi All A first for me, so in my excitement please go steady on reactions to this record-shot ... showing the bird deliberately hiding behind the proverbial small branch. Well, it was windy this morning ... it was only a digibinned shot ... and, er, I can't think of any other excuses ! Trying to...

    Mallorca 2015

Any thoughts ? Hi All Back a week or two ago now, but I am still reflecting on what this little youngster could be. It was waiting to be fed in the canalside reeds along the main approach path at S'albufera, but after a few minutes flew off into a nearby hedge. Any thoughts please, from this...

    Hill Hook Nature Reserve

Hi All Just back from an hour or two strolling around the reserve ... nothing out of the ordinary ... the best being a Chiffchaff singing for 10-15 seconds out of sight near the stream beyond the first wooden bridge, a drumming GSW, also out of sight, and a single Grey Wagtail 50 metres...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

    Birds of Warwickshire

Ladywalk Hi All First visit yesterday for many months and, whilst there was nothing 'rare or scarce' around, a very pleasant sunny day made for an enjoyable few hours. Straightaway at mid-day in the car park, I joined a number of other birders watching a Peregrine feeding on a pigeon on the...
