    Woodpeckers of the World

Thanks Guy. Yes, this was a problematic taxon. I corresponded with several locals, and several things seemed unclear. But good news if its range is more extensive. Have yiou seen this taxon? By the way, it is one thing folks on Wikiaves (or elsewhere) having photos, and another one in getting...

    Woodpeckers of the World

Actually, the potential splits (the sensible ones) were ALREADY MENTIONED in the current, 1st, edition, in the TAXONOMY AND VARIATION sections.

    Woodpeckers of the World

Richard, you seem to be presuming that I agree with all those splits in the HBW/BirdLife checklist... If my book was published now I would not include them all. Thanks.

Woodpeckers of the World book photos

Hello All, I am working on a new book, provisionally entitled Woodpeckers of the World: a photographic guide. It will be published by Christopher Helm/Poyser. The project editor is Jim Martin and he is looking for top-class photos of woodpeckers from anyone who would like to be involved. So if...

Great-spotted Woodpecker tree and cavity ?

Yes, it is almost certainly the work of a woodpecker. A foraging sign, a feeding hole. GSW has no trouble at all feeding low down even on logs on the ground.

    Woodpecker Bad Lippspringe Germany

It has to be a male GSW because of (as already mentioned) the red on the nape. A point to note here is that no other woodpecker in Europe has that strong red, scarlet, on the undertail, ventral area. Others, Syrian, Middle Spotted, White-backed, have pink there.

    Helmeted Woodpecker

    Czech birds- help???

Apple orchards are usually good for Syrian Woodpecker and Wryneck. Birds like Hawfinch, which are uncommon in the UK, are common in the Czech Republic.

    Two Woodpeckers from Spain

That is very, very true. No offence to anyone, but the term DNA is banded about as if it is the end of everything, the factor that settles all taxonomic issues... but it is not that at all. Anyway, great pics of sharpei by Mark Etheridge, who kindly then let me post them on my woodpecker blog...

    Two Woodpeckers from Spain

I have not heard about any DNA test. If you know where the results are, a paper, whatever, please let me know. But if they are "almost identical" then that itself is interesting. Does "almost identical" mean different ? The DNA of humans and chimpanzees is also "almost identical" isn't it ?

    Two Woodpeckers from Spain

Gentlemen... P.v.sharpei occurs in southern France. It's range "overflows" into France from Spain at the two ends of the Pyrenees (Pyrenees-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrenees). It co-habits with P.v.viridis there. e.g. In France, Jean-Louis Grange has studied it. Gerard Gorman.

Eastern Europe ...Lithuania, a birder's tale.

That's right... but not always. And atually, in my experience, I'd say that near the nest Tawny Owls attack human intruders as much as Ural Owls do...
