    European Stork - Edinburgh today

Same bird (Left ankle ring) was outside Stevenson College today at lunchtime, entertaining the students. Very tame and could be approached to 10 feet before it would get wary. Laurence H

Feather ID, Scotland, Buzzard or Owl?

Any idea where it's from. I'm thinking it's a secondary.

Feather ID, Scotland, Buzzard or Owl?

I found this feather yesterday by the roadside. Arable farmland with small woods. It struck me as a very broad feather. My guess from looking round the internet is common buzzard. Any views would be appreciated. Thanks, Laurence

Info wanted on White Stork, Blair Drummond

Thanks, that'll explain it then. The staff member I spoke to said it had flown in, but forgot to add 'last year'!!

Info wanted on White Stork, Blair Drummond

Today I was at Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling. I saw a white stork on the roof of the sea-lion house and presumed it 'belonged' to the park. However I couldn't make out any rings on its legs. I asked a guy from the birds of prey section and he said it wasn't the park's and had flown...

    Buzzard behaviour - being mobbed

My drive to work and back usually involves a sighting of a buzzard or two. In the last two days I have seen buzzards being mobbed by crows three times (likely involving 2 buzzards). Since I started this route in April, this is the first time I have seen any buzzards being mobbed. Why is this...

    Lothian Birding

I was driving through Musselburgh today and saw a 'not quite right' buzzard over the racecourse. Couldn't stop and didn't have my binoculars either! Looked long-winged, but didn't see it soar so couldn't see wing angle. :C Laurence

    New eyecups required

Do you know anyone in the UK who could 'ahem' pretend they were for them and then post them on to you? Laurence

    New eyecups required

Just for information for anyone else requiring them, I e-mailed Nikon UK and they sent me a new set for free. Great service!

Ship Assisted Birds - Are they Sinking?

If we argue that human activities are a 'natural' part of the world then surely my budgie, which I bought from a human budgie breeder, who bred it from the descendents of wild budgies, counts. If anyone wants to tick it, I'll be charging £1 entry fee to go to charity. I don't actually have a...

    New eyecups required

I have a pair of Nikon 8x30 EII binoculars that I bought about 6 or 7 years ago. They continue to be a brilliant binocular, but over the last year the rubber eyecups have hardened (I'm sure there's a technical term for this but I don't know it ...) and now they don't grip the eyepieces very well...

Amphibian call ID required - central Europe

I was in Slovakia last week and whilst birdwatching I heard a call which I had not heard before. It was a repetitive 'ho' sound, repeated at about 1 second intervals for about 30 seconds. It reminded me, sound-wise, of a hoopoe, but clearly wasn't. I thought it might be a little bittern, but...

    Birds fae Torry

I had an idea a few months back for a photographic exhibition of discarded shoes. There were a couple on the A1 near me. But not being a photographer meant that it remained just an idea. Perhaps you could take up the baton? Then again, probably not... Laurence

    Flycatcher (?), Buenos Aires, Argentina

Masked Water Tyrant seemed to fit best, but apparantly doesn't live in Argentina! http://www.arthurgrosset.com/sabirds/maskedwater-tyrant.html

    Flycatcher (?), Buenos Aires, Argentina

Taken by my non-birder friend in Costanera Sur, near Buenos Aires in the last week. I know it might be a long shot, but does anyone know what this is? A quick trawl through the internet has led me to suspect it is some kind of Tyrant or Flycatcher. Laurence

    Is this a Buzzard?

I've no experience of Steppe Eagle but have seen Lesser Spotted Eagles, which this does not remind me of. It is definitely not a buzzard though! Laurence

    Nesting Lesser Black Backed Gulls.

I see you live in Edinburgh. So do I and yesterday I witnessed two adult LBBG's divebombing a man and his dog in my street. They weren't getting nearer than about 10 feet, but the guy still seemed a bit distressed! And the dog was going mad. Thought no more about it until today when I was...

It really looks short-legged, which is why I'll say kingfisher too.
