Longer recording using Merlin bird ID

As part of the Global Bird Count the past 4 days I have been putting my iphone out on the deck outside my house and leaving it for a longer period than would be comfortable to sit outdoors. I was surprised today to have recordings of 38 species. This is the down time of year with cold and wet...

Source of bird recording gear based in the UK

I found this website that sells audio gear at very low prices. https://www.parabolicmicrophone.co.uk/collections/all I have a parabolic dish and stereo mic setup that I purchased from Telinga in Sweden and paid $1,100 plus shipping to the USA. The UK gear is considerably cheaper to buy. Their...

https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/home/content/newsroom/news-overview/2023/dti-nature.html Last year Zeiss released 4 different new Gen 2 thermal imaging cameras. Expensive but one does have the integration of the scope, thermal sensor, and camera with storage. Good field research tool .

Wildlife Acoustics experiences with their automated recorders

I am looking for a recorder that is "voice" activated to be able to record birds while they are making their calls and not have hours of recordings that have no bird noise. In particular I would like to record the owls at night and I have at least three species around my property...

    Great savings on bino purchases

Often BHG Photo will have a button to have them send a special price to your email box. Today they discounted the price for Vortex 18x56 Kaibab HD binoculars by 30% or $350. I have used this feature a couple times in the past to save a great deal of money buying new binoculars.

Waist belt mounted case for large bins

With my larger 15x56 bins I would like to have them in a pouch or case attached to a waist belt. I prefer not to have a chest harness and I am often carrying a backpack with photo gear. I have however, not been able to find anything and may need to go to a shoe repair shop to have nylon belt...

Steiner 15x56 HX added to the collection

I have been gradually working my way up in binocular magnification going to 10x and then 12x and now a 15x bino from Steiner. They are 44 ounces but do not feel heavy in use. One thing that is very nice are the angled eyecups that shield the eyes from side lighting and improve the comfort when...

    Problems with donating binoculars

I have more than a few binoculars that I no longer use and would like to donate them to people who could use them. Often with my overseas trips I have encountered people who would be happy to get the binos but their governments impose exhorbitant taxes on imports so the cost of the used bino is...

Ultra close focus binoculars from Pentax

The Pentax 8.5 x 21 Papilo II binoculars focus to a distance of 0.5 meters which is magnitudes closer than any other binocular at any price. There is also a 6x21 version and it has a close focus distance of 0.5 meter as well and weighs only 10.2 ounces. For viewing birds, insects, amphibians...

    Water dish as bird attaction

I started using a 24" diameter and 1.5 inch deep saucer to provide drinking water and a bath for the birds in my area. The smallest finches and the red shouldered hawks and everything in between are using the water. I dump it each day and put in fresh water and as I am on a well there is no...

Tripod to bino adapter for standard tripod head with 3/8-16 stud

All the bino adapters I have found for use with a tripod have a hole for a 1/4" stud and all my tripods have the standard 3/8-16 mounting studs. I cannot use an adapter and have a stable mounting for the adapter. Has anyone come up with a solution?

    Returning Zeiss 10x32 binos

I watched videos and read forum posts about the new Zeiss SF binoculars and saw no mention of the odd front objective cover and its attachment to the front of the binos with a small lanyard. Even the pictures of the Zeiss binoculars from the manufacturer and the cover of the Zeiss bino box does...

Nikon refurbished optics at deep discount

Nikon has announced a sale on optics that have been "refurbished" which often means sold and returned and so under US law cannot be sold as new a second time. One example, Nikon Monarch HG 10x42 binos selling for $500

    Case for 10x25 pocket binos

Unfortunately Swarovski only sells a case for the 10x25 CL Pocket binocular that is too small to accommodate a strap and with no rain cap or objective lens covers I would prefer not to carry it around in stuff sack. What cases have others found that will fit these binoculars with a strap? Not...
