    Garden/Yard List 2019

KenM. The Goshawk was great team work. Gulls were calling frantically, I looked up and shouted out WTF! My wife heard me shout and grabbed my bins of the dining table and gave them out to me as I ran in for them. Just got the bird in the bins as it hammered off.

    Garden/Yard List 2019

Quick visit to say added Scopoli’s Shearwater to my Turkish House list. 14 years I’ve been checking the bay for them. Never more than 3 but sightings for a couple of hours one afternoon. Also 2nd record of Dalmatian Pelican, one soaring and climbing overhead. After 21 years of living on the...

    Garden/Yard List 2018.

Not near the estuary unfortunately a classic suburban garden but in a river valley so a few birds do go up and down. In the same valley, I’ve seen Osprey from my house, Black Kite over my sisters, Honey Buzzard past my dads and spoonbill from a friends house. 3 white stork must also have...

A recent trip up to North Wales got me 299- Black Grouse at World's End. A very good trip with a nice supporting cast. Today was finally big 300 day. This was an apologetic BOOM! moment and the species-Cattle Egret (5). Had a trip to ham wall my 2nd best ever birding day, what a stunning...

    Garden / Yard List 2017

see post 627. I have nightjar on my Turkey house list but also one evening a stone curlew flew down the street at roof level calling. I expected nighjar they are often around the Sitesi at dusk. stone curlew was completely unexpected despite their being present on the nearby police academy land.

What's been your "Best ever find" under "challenging" conditions?

I also just remembered Mark Turner rummaging about in the bottom of a bag on the way back to Leeds and pulling out a pair of dry socks. The socks looked wonderful. Mark and Jane and I had gone to Norfolk for a very very wet biirding weekend. I don't think anything in the car other than the...

What's been your "Best ever find" under "challenging" conditions?

I didn't see a first winter Glaucous Gull one January that was stationary and centred in two scopes. I was shivering and my teeth chattering too much. It was in the late 70's and my saturated "waterproofs" were a pair of jeans and a nylon parka. It would have been a lifer. I was so envious of...

    Garden / Yard List 2017

Garden in Gwent would do OK as its pretty big, in a river valley and a suburban environment. I have seen Osprey and Hobbies from here. Had a Grey Heron stood on next doors roof this morning and singing Willow Warbler a couple of weeks ago. Best bird in the Garden so far a reed bunting although...

    Garden / Yard List 2017

I saw more swifts this visit then ever before. Tried hard for Alpine but couldnt clinch one. I think I've said this before but my patch which includes my house reminds me a lot of Portland. I even have top fields and West cliffs (not very tall admittedly) I have a lengthy patch list but lots...

    Garden / Yard List 2017

Just returned from a couple of weeks out at my house in Turkey. 33 Species in total. The highlights and they were high were a long awaited and wanted first sighting of Eleanora's falcon. After waiting so long (we bought the house in 2004) I saw both light and DP birds, and saw at least one...

    Heard in SW Turkey

Looking for some help with a bird I heard call three times in flight outside of Didim, Turkey. Couldn'T see the bird and it went through quickly. Call a loud di-syllabic Ke-wier. Short Ke (as in Ah, Buh, Ke (A B C) wier= rising fluty (almost di-syllabic). Ta John

Trip out to Strumble today hoping for a UK tick Cory's. Got there for 6:50. A Cory's and two Great and Two Sooties had already gone through. I stayed until 11:30 and missed another Great (close enough to photo) and another 6 Sooties. Despite the regulars trying to get me on them I couldn't pick...

Was visiting Gloucester today for work so called in lunchtime to see if the Penduline Tits were around. There were 8 scattered birders around the lake/pond looking bored. I notice some bullrush at the back of the lake being shredded and glimpsed two birds moving (turned out these were reed...

    Birds spread bush Fires!!

Any-one see this in the Times today. May not be true but a great story. Apparently there are multiple reports of birds in Australia picking up embers/burning twigs and dropping them onto areas that are not on fire. It is thought that this is deliberate as the same species; black kite and brown...

    Iceland May 2015

Stunning photos. I don't photograph birds myself but I'm guessing the birds are generally tolerant of people? The light in Iceland is conducive also? The breeding plumages also spectacular. We went to Iceland last January and enjoyed it so much we are going back this January. We plan to go...

    Bay of Biscay

I went across Biscay on a 39 foot yacht last year. We had a short-eared owl go by more or less mid-bay.We had a few passerines and waders land or circle the yacht. One robin landed on the wheel and sat there for some time despite the wheel being in use. We did see a variety of seabirds and...
