is TCON 17 out of production? any alternative?

Hi All. My TCON 17, which I had for now 2 years, is now dead. Some optical elements got loose inside (I ve heard it is not an uncommon issue for that teleconverter). I was looking at BH photo, Adorama and Amazon and could not find any. Are they now discontinued? Anyone know a good (or...

Final consensus was the bird was a DC cormorant. Interesting bird.

Birders from Florida, Anhinga/DC Cormorant ID help needed

Took these pictures a few days ago of a possible Anhinga / or double crested cormorant. We have been debating for days now about the id of this bird. http://www.flickr.com/photos/16970154@N07/ The tail seem way too short for an Anhinga, so now we think DC cormorant. Could anyone repost the...

Nikon bins warranty : any experience?

Update on my Nikon monarch 8*42. Eye cups broke for the second time (that's about 2 months after Nikon fixed them). Took really good care of those for those 2 months, so I am very disappointed. Really depressing, the migration is in full swing, and I have to hope that the bunch of brocoli...

Looking for a nice birding lodge in the rockies

Hi Chris I ended up switching to California, in a beautifull lodge in Sequoia National Park. The lodge was perfect, located in the middle of the park. The name of the place was Wuksachi Lodge. There was some mountain quails and olive sided flycatchers singing in the morning, it was really...

    Nikon Monarch 8x42

Just got back my bins from Nikon-US. They replaced the faulty eye cups for free (no discussion necessary), realigned and cleaned the bins (Monarch 8*42 too), in less than 2 weeks, including shipping both ways. And the twisting eye cups might (not sure) have a different design, with deeper threads.

Nikon bins warranty : any experience?

Just to close this discussion, I just received my bins back from Nikon US, and they fixed the eye cups for free, including a complete cleaning and an alignment check. They did not charge anything and they even gave me a pair of lens cover which I lost. The whole thing took less than 2 weeks...

add a directionnal microphone on Itouch/Iphone?

I've heard that new Itouch 4G has much better recording capacity than the previous generations....does it mean it could be effectively be used to record the occasional odd bird, for later ID? what's about adding a microphone (directional) to it? Maybe I am just dreaming, but the idea to have...

    Autofocus Speed for fz serie

Hi All, Just went though the great thread about fz100. Lots of discussion about autofocus speed. I am myself the happy owner of a fz 28. Is there any way to quantify the autofocus speed of all those great cameras? I understand that the main improvement of fz28 over fz18, and fz45 over fz28...

looking for tips for Sequoia NP

Hi California Birders! Am from Michigan, and am planning a family trip to Sequoia NP at the end of June. That would be my first birding trip in California, so most birds would be lifers for me 6 days in the lodge, with 1 years old baby and wife (also a birder). Any tip about good spots in the...

    T-CON 17 for FZ 18

I agree with Niels, I don't see any advantage in using the teleconverter mode (I have been using the TCON17 on my pana fz28 for about 3 months) Only thing that might have an influence, is the exif file. You might be able to show that you used the TCON 17 (but I have not checked this thing out)...

Will be in Park City in August, any tip?

I will be in Park City in August, with a 1 year old baby, while my wife is attending a conference. Any tip where to go birding? I remember there is quite a nice network of trails, but I would appreciate any good tip to see the local specialties. I don't think I will have a car, though, so I...

Lumix FZ38 - using the main screen as the viewfinder

That's a good test, thanks! Typically I have the same difference of focus quality, unless I get particularly lucky. Did you do the manual focus picture with your loupe?

Lumix FZ38 - using the main screen as the viewfinder

That's a great find. I was wondering if this could help for the manual focus? So far most of the pictures I took in Manual focus were not perfectly sharp, so maybe this would help?

Any alternative to the DMW-LA3 adapter?

I ordered yesterday the Tcon17 for my pana fz28 (I live in the US). Only problem I could not find a DMW-LA3 adapter on Adorama or Bh photo (out of stock). On amazon, they propose a new (an cheaper) adapter, the janco, for about $10...

Looking for a nice birding lodge in the rockies

Hi All. I am a birder and very recent dad, living in Michigan. I am still hoping to do a little bit of birding sometimes in september in the rockies, although I will probably looking after my baby most of the time. Looking though the internet, I thought that going to ester park might be a good...
