What kind of sandpiper/sanderling? Santiago, Galapagos

Ken, I too can see the 'spatulate shape' you refer to, but alas this is like one of those optical illusions where you can perceive things more than one way. What you are perceiving to be the front right (as we look at it) of a spatulate bill, is actually the base of the lower mandible. What you...

at last the shell guide british birds

As a novice 80s YOC member the Shell Guide was also excellent as the UK/Ire only map gave you a more accurate idea of distribution here (compared to squinting at maps in European guides), and in particular the seasonal numbers an idea of scarcity.

    Nashville Warbler?

Looks good for Nashville with the apparent strength of eye-ring on grey and all yellow underparts. JW

Plain Swift - Tenerife (Covert birding)

Hi Stuart, I just returned from Tenerife (S side) and did have bins. Plain Swifts were very common around the hotel complex and over most of the island, and your description perfectly fits how they appear with the naked eye. JW

    Garden/Yard List 2022

Could it possibly be that in such low quality images, detail is being lost? Even in your chosen picture there is a darker line between the eye and the bill, just shown more clearly in the one I chose. Still, just my humble thoughts. I would be recording this as Mute Swan. Happy birding Ken. JW

    Garden/Yard List 2022

Here Ken, does this help? But I realise now there's no point discussing with you. Not sure why you posted on a forum really.

    Garden/Yard List 2022

Because it appears to show the chunk of black between the eye and bill base that you said was not remotely in evidence. Apologies if I have orchestrated an alternative view to your own, I should have known better than to get involved.

    Garden/Yard List 2022

I disagree. Even with the awful image quality which I am loathe to draw any firm conclusion from, how can this be deemed as more likely Whooper than Mute?

    Potential Goosander? UK

Goosander it is. Neat demarcation between 'red' head and chest helps separate from Merganser. JW

Sandvicensis with a strange shape (Portugal - November 2022)

I suspect what Miguel means is, what is trailing behind the bird? - it does look like something is hanging off the back end, but I think it is just the tail photographed at a particular angle. JW

    Aberrant swift or something rarer?

All part of the learning experience Ev4, well done for asking. Always take a holistic view of ID and don't focus too much on just one feature- there are some ridiculous threads on here depicting poor images of birds in unusual lighting where one lone barely discernable feature is being used to...

    Swallow - Invermere, B.C. Canada - May 14/22

You guess correct - agree with Ken on chest feathering, but I'd say the 'fork' is an illusion created by the primaries of the left wing tip. JW

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Oh I see - they didn’t quite look the same to me (e.g. the cut side-branch top right looking more upright), but I guess it's easy for such features to be misrepresented in a photo due to subtle differences in angle and lighting...or the tree changing with age (presumably it blew down soon after...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

I'm a little confused by the composite above. Is it the case that you have found a tree that looks the same shape and proportion as the one in the video still, then attached a Pileated specimen in order to try and draw a comparison?

Possible Spotted Sandpiper? Madeira Island, this morning

Agreed: limited white wing bar another pro Spotted feature. The wing-tips almost reaching tail tip is spot on!
