Many thanks for your response and the link. I was beginning to think there were no birders in Oregon! Regards from London. UK Rosie.

    Coastal Oregon in August

It may be true that August is rarely the best month for birding but it's what I've got! I will be in Oregon travelling north to south along the coast from Cannon Beach to Newport. I'm always keen to see and photograph shorebirds and seabirds . Am I right in thinking it would be a bit early for...

    Chemical warmers??

I've been reading the thread on warm winter boots for standing around in! I bought a pair of Sorels late last winter but I haven't really had the opportunity to test them. They were mentioned by a well known pro wildlife photographer in Outdoor Photography magazine for use especially when...

    Canon 400 f4 DO lens

I agree with jtwood. I've had the DO for three years now and I think the quality is fine. Not saying I wouldn't purchase a 500mm if I could carry it....but I can't! I like being able to get on to birds in flight quickly handheld and then, with the 1x4, to photograph shoreline waders from a low...

    Fungi sites in/near London.

Thanks for the responses. Perhaps it's too early. I went to box Hill last Thursday. Good for porcelain fungus and clusters on rotting logs but not much in the way of large stuff. Thanks for the Esher common tip! May give that a go.

    Fungi sites in/near London.

I really enjoy photographing fungi but at the moment I am having difficulty in tracking much down. Had a wander around Wimbledon Common on Sunday and really didn't find anything. I am considering Box Hill which I remember from past occasions can be good. I don't drive (if I did, I'd try more to...

Shoulder bag for EF 400mm f/5.6

Try a fishing tackle shop if you have one near you. I'm always surprised by the variety of waterproof bags of all descriptions they stock. Often much cheaper than camera bags too. If you need some protective padding, buy a cheap foam exercise mat from a supermarket and carve it up to customise...

    Help with seeing migrants

I found learning the calls and songs was the best way for me. One bird's chirp is often different from another's! If you can put some time into listening, it can often help your seeing...if you know what i mean. My sight is pretty poor so I rely on my hearing to locate birds. I sometimes go out...

New Canon superzoom 500/600 lenses at London Bird Watch?

I was told by the canon people there that the 200-400 was little more than an idea...which was a bit of a surprise! Don't think they are anywhere near producing one .

New Canon superzoom 500/600 lenses at London Bird Watch?

I did go to the show and played about with the lenses as did my mate. Whilst the 500 and 600 were too heavy for me (63, female, 5ft 2) they were lighter than previous models. My mate who is in his 40s and a tall bloke said of the 500m " This is gorgeous: I could hold this all day!" What really...

    Canon 7d settings

The best 20 dollars I ever spent was on Artie Morris' 7D set up guide. Pay on line and it arrives as a PDF file on your email. The website is called BirdsAsArt. Rosie (London UK)

Question for Canon 800 f5.6 users (especially those who also have 500 f4)

I have no experience of either but I know Artie Morris uses his 800m pretty much all the time so might be worth visiting the BirdsAsArt site. Of course, they get better light than us and birds are often more confiding. If he gets the new DX camera though, he may give up the 800 for the new 500...

    Florida/Naples area in April/May?

Many thanks, Steve, for your help. Yes, we can get a bit foggy at times but mostly it's grey, grey skies in winter. I know what you mean about the flat light. Most of the amazing shots I see on BPN are taken early or late. Season's Greetings and good birding in 2012. Rosie.

    Florida/Naples area in April/May?

I'm enquiring for a couple of photo buddies of mine who have visited Florida three or four times but always in November. They are considering returning at a different time of year, maybe April\May but are a bit anxious about weather/light/heat/bugs/ drought (hell, everything!!!). We're from...
