    Interesting gull at Pennington Flash

Just a heads-up for anyone birding Pennington Flash. I did the gull roost there last Wednesday, and noted an interesting large gull (present fairly early on). Alongside an adult yellow-legged gull, this bird (also an adult) looked similar to yellow-legged, with a similarly dark grey mantle, and...

    Channel/Blue-headed Wagtail, UK

Any thoughts on this bird, photographed at Polemere, Shropshire, yesterday evening?

    Norfolk birding

Some in the hedgerow beyond the windmill on Sluice Road, Denver. Can't remember if there were fewer than previous years though. Pretty much all fruits seem to have taken a hit this year.

No worries, that's fair enough. I'm referring to the Collins and the Advanced Bird ID Guide.

    Norfolk birding

I don't know about the head profile, but I think there's nothing wrong with the bill given that this bird is a female. The black nail is only a requirement for purity in adult males, and having taken a look at photos on Birdguides (including from the breeding range) I don't think the black is...

    Norfolk birding

I'd like to know too (I do have a vested interest though). Surely if there are Pochard genes in there they didn't enter in the bird's recent ancestry?

    Norfolk birding

Good day at Holme today. Highlights included 8 Ring Ouzel, Firecrest and Black Redstart, plus (between 2.30 and 3.30 on the sea) Pom Skua, Manxie and 40+ Kittiwake. Decided to try for better views of the Arctic Warbler after my seawatch... but never made it, thank to a Locustella warbler which...

    Oxford Moth for Confirmation

Great stuff. I'm sure it'll serve you well when the floods dry up. Yes, would've been good to catch up. Feel free to text me if you're in Norfolk again this autumn. And thanks. James

    Green-brindled Crescent?

    Thanks for the confirmation Harri.

    Oxford Moth for Confirmation

I didn't realise you did moths. Is that a recent development? Thanks for asking. I've finished at UEA - now experiencing the joy of jobhunting. Met a birder in the pub in the first week, so yes, I was able to get out a fair bit actually (the lighter workload helped!). I've already read your...

    Tortrix

Had a quick look on UK moths but couldn't find this one. Image is quite blurred, but the moth was fairly distinctive.

    Green-brindled Crescent?

Trapped last night in Denver, Norfolk. Is this F. capucina? I've only come across the green form here before.

    Oxford Moth for Confirmation

Looks good. In case you haven't met him yet, a birder named Liam Langley has just started at Brasenose and is looking to make Port Meadow his patch. I am jealous!

    Moths from 15th July

Thanks Sean. What's the deal with my Coronet being quite differently coloured from the pictures in Waring and Townsend?

    Moths from 15th July

Seriously rusty and having a bit of difficulty with the following. I've named those I think I know, but really not sure about a couple. Help appreciated!

    Norfolk birding

Stumbled across a Clouded Yellow at Denver Sluice today, along with a day-flying Red Underwing which decided to hitch a lift on my back.

    Common Redpoll - Norfolk, UK

To give closure to the matter, and in case anyone in the future is searching the site to try and find Redpoll ID tips, I've compiled an ID feature on my diary explaining why this bird is actually a (the) Coues' Arctic Redpoll (yes, I was quite surprised too!)...

    pale bellied brent? norfolk

Not sure if it's the same bird, but I had one with the flock in fields next to the visitor centre on 2nd December.

    Common Redpoll - Norfolk, UK

Thanks for the replies. As far as I'm aware the lack of streaking on the rump and undertail coverts rule out Lesser (the wing bars were also clearly white in the field - sorry about the light!). I was just wondering if it's possible to tell the subspecies of Common.

    Common Redpoll - Norfolk, UK

Watching the Redpoll flock at Titchwell and not being that experienced with them, we spent some time on this bird. When we did eventually see the Arctic Redpoll it was clearly different, so I'm pretty confident this bird is Common (photos show white wing-bar, rump and single streak on undertail...

    Norfolk birding

Haven't been keeping up properly with the thread, but I don't think Dave's right - talking to others in the hide it wasn't just me who saw 3 different birds on Friday. I'm confused! :smoke:

    Norfolk birding

Yes, there are definitely three birds.
