    The Highlands and Islands Thread

It is a lousy time of year to see, let alone photograph cresties. You do realise that they Schedule 1 protected don't you? That means that you will need a licence to photograph them at or near the nest, which they almost certainly will be at this time of year. Autumn would be much better for...

    Scotland in October

The small birds will have shipped out or flocked up. However, this gives excellent opportunities. Go to Loch Garten and take sunflower hearts with you. Dozens of coal tits coming to your hands to feed and cresties within stroking distance. Loads of wintering birds arriving - thrushes,wildfowl...

I’m going to be on Birdwatching Magazine

The road from leading northwest from Altnaharra to Loch Hope - which I described as Mamba Country in the book (miles and miles of bugger all) - was an absolute death trap last time we tried it. The road due north from Altnaharra was certainly sprouting grass. I was always surprised that the...

I’m going to be on Birdwatching Magazine

Thanks for the good wishes. Don't worry - it's never a hardship to go/go back. Fortunately, mountains don't move very far, so most of the information in the book is still accurate. I envy your wife though (no, not in that way...). I can remember our first trip to the Highlands over 30 years ago...

Thanks for the message. I'm fine, though terminal apathy has set in. Best wishes to you too.

Ah. But did written word match up to the person you vaguely know? I had about half an hour to draft some silly answers when someone far more famous than me dropped out at the last minute. I just hope that no-one took my answer of 'Move to Norfolk' too seriously when asked what was the best way...

    Applecross NW Scotland

Ptarmigan on the to of Bealach na Ba if the road isn't closed. The Bays should hold good numbers of divers, especially Great Northerns. Local specialities such as Black Guillemot, hooded crow, twite and rock dove. Shieldai is well worth exploring - chance of white tailed eagle. Kylerhea just...

    Are new scopes really better?

If you can wait a couple of weeks, it would be well worth your while visiting the Bird Fair at Rutland Water. In the optics marquee there, you will be able to compare dozens of models side by side, ranging from the top of the range to more modest examples. See https://birdfair.org.uk/ for more...

    Wood Warbler in Scotland...

Craigellachie NNR in Aviemore is good. KIlliecrankie NTS just off the A9 is excellent, with birds often at eye-level. As you head west, the valleys southwest of Inverness - Cannich, Strathfarrar and Affric all hold wood warblers

    Griswold's Vacations 2019

Hi Rich, Congrats on the Caper. We're up in May so I'll be picking your brains before then - send me a pm if the info is sensitive. I would put Arran at the bottom of your list - a relatively small island with nowhere to go if you want to escape for the day. I'm always happy to sing the...

    Jedburgh- any recommendations

Take a quick walk along the river from the car park in front of the abbey. Dipper, Goosander and Grey Wagtail along the river, with assorted warblers (in spring) and Nuthatch singing in the trees on the far bank. Delightful spot.

    Bird books

The Collins Bird Guide (Svensson et al) is generally reckoned to be the best field guide in the world. If you prefer a photo guide, the Britain's Birds (Hume et al, Wild Guides) is the best. There are many excellent books on birds and history, poetry, music etc - let me know your tastes and...

    Griswold's Vacations 2018

Hi Rich, There used to be a small population of Cresties but I've not heard of any reports for about 15 years. Corncrakes should be returning imminently so the drive/ferry to Iona is probably worth your while. Great drive anyway and plenty of time to bird from the car if you get stuck behind...

    Norfolk birding

Great day for raptors in North Norfolk this morning. At one stage at Burnham Overy, we had 21 large raptors (15 buzzards, four red kites and two marsh harriers) in the air simultaneously. Earlier, at a site further west, we logged a ringtail hen harrier, six sparrowhawks and 1-2 goshawks, one of...

    ring-necked parakeet request

Hi, I'm meeting a friend in London shortly and he has expressed a desire to see a Ring-necked Parakeet. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which of the Central London parks is likely to be our best bet? I'm guessing St James, but I'm open to persuasion. Thanks in advance, Gordon

    Norfolk birding

There was a massive displacement of geese in North Norfolk in last night's fog (January 10th/11th). I heard a few Pinkfeet flying over our house on the Briston/Melton Constable border (about ten miles from the North Norfolk coast) at 5.45 pm when my wife returned from work. This was nothing...
