    Photo critique-eagle

Excellent photos overall! Good detail ! #1 is the impossible shot. White head in sun and dark body in shade. It would take a merge of two exposures. Fill flash could possibly help. #2 has a nasty shadow across back that will be difficult to do anything with. Again maybe fill flash. #3 and...

    Elements v CS

Roger I am a big fan of CS-3. It does a lot and there is probably nothing more capable. I also use Elements 5 on my laptop for traveling. The main different is the more exotic stuff is not in elements. CYMK printing for commerical prints for example. There a just a few features I use in 3...

Switching to DSLR for Bird Photography - Advice appreciated

You might want to think about some of the point and shoot camera with 15X zoom. Getting into a DSLR is a whole new adventure. Light Weight and size they are not. There are several zooms with 8 mega pixels or more that are under $500 and quite decent with equivalant reach of 400 mm or more.

    Some thoughts on camera design

Like the Hasselblad 2.25 by 2.25 format. I think they did it in the Hasselblad because there was no good way to turn it. But good idea! I like it.

    Which software is better?

An in expensive option is Photoshop Elements 5.0 an OEM package from Ebay. Once it is installed go to help and update and download the latest Adobe Camera Raw. Then you have the best of photoshop and one of the best raw converters without all the cost.

    Sony Alpha100

I have the A100 and upgraded as a former Minolta user. While I do some adequate work with it I would not consider it the best choice for birding. It has noise issues at anything other than ISO 100 or 200. However I think it is typical of CCD sensors in that range. I hope to get the A700 with...

    Lets try this again!

Palm it is. First how did you get it to sit still?? A little more shutter speed might make a tad sharper but makes depth of field problem more acute if you open up the aperture. Moving to right to make the bird more parallel would be desirable but not often possible with these birds. The...

    Just not sharp! Please Help!

F8 in the shade and looks to be not a bright day. That would make the shutter speed a bit slow or high ISO. I try to keep hand held shutter speed above 250 or more at 300 mm. Otherwise I get blurr like this.

Symantec (Norton): time to say goodbye

I am still using Norton on my PC. I put Zone Alarm Suite on the wife's computer and had nothing but problems. Finally remove it and put the free firewall back on to get it working. Check Point Software bought Zone Alarm and it has gone downhill since. I will give Kaspersky Internet Security...

    Taking the plunge

Beautiful bird in good light. Too bad he is facing wrong direction. Probably means wind was from the left. Actually just move the sun to left that would be better :-} A little more room above the head would help. Feels like he is gonna bump his head. Great boketh! Very natural setting...

    Recording Equipment Package Advice

Well griffin you did it, now I want a 67 :-] ME 66 has a good front to back rejection however the front is more like a 45 angle and not highly directional in that you could spot where the bird is sitting. And as stated handles wind OK.

    Recording Equipment Package Advice

I am very happy with my ME66 and Zoom H4. I think the microphone is more important than the recorder. I prefer the solid state recorders over disc. Several new recprders out since I got mine, like the new Fostex FR2LE

pepper on seeds to deter squirrels

I have used it and on most squirrels it does work and the birds don't seem to mind at all. However I had one squirrel who took a fancy to hot food. Warning don't get it on you while putting it in the feeder.
