    Great Egret

Great Egret around Longham Lakes today. I think it may have been around a little while as dog walker mentioned a white heron a couple of weeks ago although I didn't see it then

    Red Kites

Any one seeing Red Kites in Dorset. 3 sitings in the last two 3 weeks. Last one low over my head. All around Colehill.

I doubt very much that the entire fish population has been wiped out. They may be efficient predators but not that efficient. It would be niave to think that otters will have no effect and it is probable that the number of fish has been reduced and this may be visible to anglers. (Especially if...

Longham, Sunday morning: It's oh so quiet! Only comments are 53 Mutes which is quite high for the site and still 2 Common Sands about.

    Field work ... hard work!

Out of the two suggestions so far I would go for Wallcreeper but if it's neither, I seem to be imagining a hawkish eye (may just be dark depths between some feathers on the neck)

School holidays. Thought I would occupy the kids today by getting them to photograph butterflies on the Buddleias. Huh! Where are all the butterflies??? Not a single one. Is it just my garden or have others notice the absence?

Walk around Longham Sunday morning. Not very exciting. Terns still there. Also Egyptian goose which seems to only have 7 site records so far so worth a mention. Also Mandarin reported that I didn't see, but strangely also has only 7 records to date.

In the wilderness. Did I miss anything? Little wander around the lakes at Longham. Only birds of note being a couple of common terns which I understand are uncommon at the site, common sandpiper and a nice view of a whitethroat. Bit quiet.

Your bird is a partial leucistic individual. This is due to abnormal melanin deposition in the feathers. It is not uncommon in crows and frequently appears as a pale or white stripe extending the length of the wing. They can look very startling.

My current worry is my car getting stuck in Green Lane. The potholes in the unmade section are developing into massive proportions! The section along the edge of the tarmacked area where people park is also sinking. Increased birder traffic?

I will apologize in advance as I am awful at facial recognition and will fail to recognize you next time we meet. Don't take offense just introduce yourself. And also introduce yourself the time after that and the time after that!! And a general apology to anyone who thinks I may have ignored...

I'd say nearer 90% frozen! Heron were fishing in the middle of the lake. Looks like it should thaw at the end of the week. Wigeon amounted to 69 on my count. Only saw one Smew but it was cold. That's also my excuse for not seeing the Hoopoe. Glad to hear it's doing well. Think I saw the female...

    Dorset birding

I did see the Green sand on the large lake and Snipe* on the small lake but also no Hoopoe. I had the impression of increased waterfowl numbers but the mist meant no chance of a count. *the Snipe behaved exactly as the others have described the Jack but poor views meant I feel obliged to...

Longham this morning: So much mist, So much missed.

Third time lucky. |=)| Managed to get good views this afternoon. Amazing how easily such a striking bird can disappear into the vegetation. Seemed to be finding plenty of grubs to eat. Given how easily it is to overlook and the low numbers of regular birders I wonder how long it has been there...

Still cold at 10.30 as repeatedly commented on by daughter and house guest that I dragged along. Unfortunately no Hoopoe to compensate!!!!! To busy with people (including birders). The site is just too popular for its open nature. I think we need to play down the site a bit! ;)

I do not understand who this refers to. This mornings Little Egret count hit 19. All resting on N island.

I apologize but I went around sunset today and had a fantastic 20 minute view of a Bittern. Just on the waters edge with a glorious reflection. If only I had a camera! First attempt this year as well. Also Kingfisher and Cetti's calling

    Dorset birding

Quiet at the lakes this morning. 2 Shoveler that I hadn't noted previously, late/wintering Chiffchaff, 30ish Wigeon, 4 skittish Teal, only 3 Little Egrets, no Sandpipers, Common gull or Kingfishers. There were 116 Cormorants on the N lake. Amazing how easy it is to guess the number incorrectly. I...
