    Thank you everyone. That's helpful.

Costa Rica, Monteverdi - Mar 2024

This bird ran away from me on a forest trail in Monteverdi. Merlin says 'Rock Dove'. I think not. Any ideas, please? Sorry for the poor quality pic. Many thanks, Phil

Sibley - US birds. Is this still imperial measurements only?

Thanks Mono. (I've been to Mono Lake). Thanks also jmepler. Luckily I'm on Android so I may now take the plunge when I next visit America. Phil

Sibley - US birds. Is this still imperial measurements only?

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know if the Sibley app (and book, if there is a new edition) is still imperial only? Hoped they would, by now, have a setting to change to metric for users in the rest of the world. Can't get my head around 3 3/8 oz, etc. I thought scientific subjects all...

Any good equipment to get better bird song out of my phone?

Why will he need an Apple adapter for an Android phone? Will this equipment disable the agc?

UK - heard at a nature reserve in Greater London 14 April 2021

Agreed. Not a double note. Just three regular purring notes. That's all I have I'm afraid. I was leading a group at the time, otherwise I would have gone closer and hung around to get a better recording but, 'twas not to be!

UK - heard at a nature reserve in Greater London 14 April 2021

Thank you Butty. I know that some people can't hear anything. At this point, I confess I thought it was a Turtle Dove. Thank you all for your views on it.

UK - heard at a nature reserve in Greater London 14 April 2021

Thanks, Alexander. No offence taken. I fully agree the recording is not ideal, but it is the best I can do I'm afraid as the call was distant.

Thank you, Gerben. Any other observations welcome.

UK - heard at a nature reserve in Greater London 14 April 2021

Recorded yesterday morning. This recording is quite faint I'm afraid. It needs to be listened to in a quiet environment, preferably with headphones. After the obvious, close Willow Warbler, three repeated calls can be heard in the distance. Thoughts please? Many thanks

Any good equipment to get better bird song out of my phone?

I'm also a beginner to birdsong recording, though not entirely un-technical. I think the old adage holds true: 'you get what you pay for'. Phones are not ideal for birdsong. You have no control over the recording at all. The noise you hear is the noise of the mic and the circuits on the phone...

    Best Microphone For Parabolic Dish

Hi Louis, I recently had a parabola for a week. I used a Rode Lavalier Go mic which was £60, only slightly over your budget. It worked well. I don't have the parabola now. I had to give it back. I still use the Rode mic with my Olympus LS-P4 recorder to record my walks. I clip the mic to my...

Newbie. Olympus LS-P4 recording not good. Do I need a better mic? Help!

Having now received the Rode Lavalier Go mic and tried it out for some days, I have to say that I like it. I used it with the parabola for a few days in the garden and it worked very well, although I think the affair is too cumbersome for me to take in the field with my camera. I have also...

Newbie. Olympus LS-P4 recording not good. Do I need a better mic? Help!

Question: As you all use a mono mic, you may know the answer to this. Is there a small adaptor so that the sound is recorded onto both tracks? This seems to me easier than having to do it every time afterwards in Audacity. I've been looking online but I can't find one. Perhaps that's because...

Newbie. Olympus LS-P4 recording not good. Do I need a better mic? Help!

Good evening gentlemen. Yes, I am looking for a relatively low budget, simple, lightweight setup. I am sure that Borjam's advice would be optimal if birdsong recording were my primary goal. However, I'm looking for an easy way to record all the birds on my walk, for possible later ID purposes...

Newbie. Olympus LS-P4 recording not good. Do I need a better mic? Help!

Marc and iveljay, thank you very much for your expert advice. It has given me a lot to think about. I'm more of a bird photographer, but I thought it would be useful to record the birds I hear on my walks. Then, if I heard a call that I didn't recognise, I could check it when I got home. I...

Newbie. Olympus LS-P4 recording not good. Do I need a better mic? Help!

I need advice about a small mic for the Olympus. I already have the LS-P4 recorder but, at the moment, I want to record all the sounds as I do my daily walk in the wood and on the downs. I live in Surrey, near Banstead. I used an Olympus ME15 tie-pin mic (it's mono), fixed to the outside of my...

Using long lens on a sling - explanatory article

I have done an article, with explanatory photos, on how to attach a long lens to a sling so it is 'ever-ready'. I currently use a Nikon lens, but have used Canon for many years, and this technique applies to all brands as long as the lens has a tripod socket. Link here...
