    Kenai Fjords Birding-Help Needed.

I am considering a trip to Alaska next summer and definitely want to see Kenai Fjords NP for auks, auklets, pelagics, etc. Can anyone give me suggestions about which tour boat operator/tour is the best (most birder friendly)? Thanks.

    Pinkish-Billed Flavirostris GWFG?

Thanks, Nutcracker. That's helpful. I have seen Tony's name all over the web re. GWFG. Considering his reputation and experience, that's good information.

    Pinkish-Billed Flavirostris GWFG?

A question. Does anybody on this forum (or otherwise) have any experience with known "Greenland" (flavirostris) Greater White-fronted Goose that had, what could be described as, a "pinkish" (vs. orange) bill? I'd be particularly interested in examples that were found either in Greenland...

    Need Help With Albuquerque Birding

Greetings! I will be travelling to Albuquerque at the end of Feb., and need some suggestions about where to find these three birds: Western Screech-Owl, Crissal Thrasher, Chestnut-collared Longspur. Thanks!

    Lumix G5 "Pinpoint" AF Issue

Hello all. I use my G5, handheld, for photographing wild birds. I want to use the AF "Pinpoint" feature in order to get a particular spot (usually the eye) in focus. [The smallest "1-Area" size is often not small enough.] But here's the problem. In Pinpoint mode it always gives you the...

Success! Proavis, I should have posted this a while back, but we saw the Ani at Jonathan Dickinson. Pretty easy. Thanks.

    Smooth-billed Ani Status?

I will in be central FL next week and wanted to head south one day late in the week to see if I could add Smooth-billed Ani to my life list. I notice on the South Fl Rare Bird Update that they are being seen regularly at Jonathan Dickinson SP and at Loxahatchee NWR. Which of these seems to...

    Planning NM trip

I just re-read your response re. Sandia Crest. Unless something has changed in recent history, your birding experience there will be nothing like the Colorado experience. At the crest you can sit in a warm cozy restaurant and see the Rosy Finches at a feeder out the window. :-) Just...

    Planning NM trip

You're welcome. When you get back, please let us know how it went. BTW, don't forget Bosque del Apache NWR. It's on your way from Ab'q to El Paso and considered a great hotspot.

    Planning NM trip

If you have time, Rattlesnake Springs (which is part of Carlsbad Caverns NP), is an easy 2-h drive from El Paso. It's one of the best hotspots in NM. Here's a winter list...

    Planning NM trip

You will definitely want to check out the Rosy Finches (3 species) that are winter regulars on Sandia Crest, east of downtown Albuquerque. See: http://www.rosyfinch.com/ If you have time to travel elsewhere in NM, there are good spots in other locations.

    Best Scope <$1000??

I'm sure this question has been posed many times before, but this forum is huge, so... in readers' opinions, what's the best birding scope for less than $1000? Optical qualities are my first priority. Thanks.

    Tripod Head Recommendation Needed

I have a Vortex GT Pro tripod. As a tripod it's pretty good. The head is, at best, poor (IMHO). I need a recommendation for a reasonably-priced (~<$150) head to use with a spotting scope. What I would really like is a head that pans and tilts SMOOTHLY and can be QUICKLY/EASILY/accurately...

    State bird guide question

Antimedic, Check out Jerry Oldenettel's site: https://sites.google.com/site/oldenettelspage/ Scroll down to "NM Birding site guides." I lived in NM for 6 years and I go back once in a while to bird. I must recommend a spot. Since you're coming from FL, if you're driving, it would not be...

    Info. Requested re. Gray-Headed Chickadee

Thanks Josh, Thanks very much for your response. It's very informative. I have tentative plans for a hunting trip to AK in the fall of '14 with a guy who lives in Wasilla. I'm not sure where we'll go but he mentioned taking the Dalton Hwy north of the Arctic Circle. There was a post on...

    Info. Requested re. Gray-Headed Chickadee

I am thinking of a trip to Alaska and am wondering where could I go and stand a decent chance of seeing a Gray-Headed Chickadee? On other forums I have been given suggestions about a float trip company (WBA) that specializes in this bird, but wondered if there were other options. How far...

820ED 8.5x44 Audubon Porro ED Binoculars

First off, lets be honest. What most birders are primarily concerned with when they buy binoculars is the quality of the view they get when they put them up to their eyes. This concern was, Im sure, the motivation for the creation of the (essentially) now-defunct web site Better View Desired...

    Other NM birders?

Places You MUST Bird in NM! NM is a wonderful state for birders. I assume from your post that you are in the Ab'q area. Let me suggest a few spots that are worth a day's drive, though. First, Rattlesnake Springs at Carlsbad Caverns NP. This is becoming, truly, a national "hot spot." See...
